so i think that people should have to take a test or a course in order to own a dog. maybe you get a license or something. i dont know. i havnt worked out the details yet. too many people out there are giving the dogs i love a bad name.

anyone agree?

so, i am thinking of fostering a dog that was rescued from a puppy mill a few months ago. she was diagnosed with brucellosis when initially taken to the vet. she has been spayed. i do not know what tests were run on her or if she had a blood culture done.

now, assuming that she has been on a course of antibiotics, what would be the risk to my other dogs? my other dogs btw are all spayed and neutered.

We of course won't be able to do this forever because the new puppy will eventually be bigger than my dog, but..

My cocker spaniel gets crated at night- he's about a year and a half old. We recently adopted another puppy- a border collie/husky mix. The cocker spaniel is very much happy with his new baby "sister" and she crawls in his crate with him at night to sleep (I think he's become sort of a psuedo-mommy). She has her own crate, buts he whines so much when crated alone, and enjoys sleeping with him.

Is it okay to do this for a little while until she adjusts to her new home? Or should we force her to sleep in a crate by herself?

I just read "A Pit Bull Face-Off" in the October 2007 issue of Reader's Digest, I'm not going to type the entire story out but I am going to qoute the main areas of the story and then you tell me what excuse is there to continue having this horrid breed in our society?
In Memphis on his way to McDonalds with his two sons Griggs saw: "A man was lying on the sidewalk, frantically kicking at two dogs that were hunched over him and snarling." "...58-year old James Chapple Jr was on the ground screaming as two powerfully built pit bulls dragged him along the sidewalk. Earlier that evening the pair had escaped through an open door..." "Griggs took out his cell phone, dialed 911 and told the operator what was happening. After hanging up, he decided he had to do something besides sit there and wait for help to arrive." At a nearby firehouse. "On the ground near the station, he saw a lead pipe about four feet long."

So imagine caught your stray. It's 6:30 on a Friday night and your vet is closed. So is the animal shelter. The dog is friendly but is thin, hungry and just scared. Maybe he's sick, maybe he's not... A trip to the emergency clinic is overkill and super expensive.

So now what? What exactly are you going to do with your stray?

This is an extension of yesterday's question about taking ownership and making something your problem. Plus, you have your own animals at home.

It's only one night. The shelter is open in the morning. Your vet is open in the morning. What could possibly go wrong?

I'm not bringing this up to scare anyone; quite the contrary. I want us to all share our knowledge so when it happens to you - and it will - you can take in a stray over night and not put your own dogs at risk!

Are you prepared to quarantine a dog overnight? Do you know what that means?

Have fun and discuss!

My puppy has been going potty in her cage since we got her, we had blankets & pillows in there for her, but they got soaked with urine, so we took them out, now that theres just a tray in there, sht still tends to go inside her crate, then just lay in it! its discusting and stinks up the whole house, we take it out & clean it everytime, and she does it as soon as she gets back in there! she goes potty outside everytime we take her out (which is a lot) but as soon as she comes back in, she insits on going inside 100 times also! is there any suggestions to get her to crate train? ive never had problem potty training a puppy, once theyre crate trained, its easy to house train, but she just wont crate train. HELP!

I am a kennel worker and a beagel mix that i work with had a flea collar put on her neck. She drooled and it got on the collar causing it to bleed onto her. It is green color. We've tried everything, but nohing worked. And I don't want to irritate the skin.

My dog is a Boston Terrier who is 5 months old. this is my first time ever having a dog and it seems that every 5 minutes i am taking her out to use the restroom. Is it because she is still young? is there something i can do to help her hold it longer?

I was wondering how old dogs are when they normally drop their tesicles and if they don't how long would you wait to get them neutered?

For your animal for that matter?

I am getting my little dachshund a fresh new mattress (bed) and maybe some special bones and biscuits and lovely new shiny collar.

Any recommendations for other gifts would be welcome!

Have a lovely day or night!

He is about a year old and we got him from the Humane Association two weeks ago. He's a Golden Retriever mix (weighs 38 lbs).

He's very energetic, so we walk him a lot, and it occurred about a half hour before his meal time, so I'm hoping he was just hungry or something? He's acting normal, happy, and alert. Had a normal bowel movement this morning.

Please let me know if you need any further information. Thanks in advance for your help!

Ok, so my distance cousin has a Rottweiler mix that he neglects and abuses, his father (my uncle) has been telling him that he has to clean up his act or the dogs gone. My uncle goes over evry day to feed him and give him water. The animal control took the dog from him once but they got him back. They asked us if we could take him but my mom told him that we couldn't because we already have two large dogs. I'm trying to talk my mom into letting us take him for a couple of days until we could find him a porper home but my mom says no. If you were in this situation wouldn't you have a heart enough to take him in at least until the right home is found? What would you do?

I am just furious! I paid for those 'on the shoulder' flea treatment by the vet, vacuumed the house, washed the bedding, etc, and now my poor dog is loaded with new fleas (and yes I know the egg cycle!) I washed him with a flea shampoo. (no not right after the treatment - I know to wait), but seems that these treatments just ATTRACT the critters. I don't want to let the dog in the house for fear of re-infestation of the house.

Is there a safe home-made 'water dip' (water & hydrogen peroxide?) I can use (BTW he's Dachs/Peke mix)? His skin is SO irritated from scratching. I'm on a fixed budget, so can't afford to take him to a fancy place. Maybe a garlic rub?!?!
