THANK YOU FOR having the brains to get a rescue.
No matter what your preference there is a rescue site for them. BUT please, be aware that it may take time, PLEASE dont be in a hurry, if there is a particular breed, ...then type it in your browser with the word "rescue " after it, ...sometimes there is a waiting list, but please dont get a puppy!! ...little dogs live a long time, so consider a 3 to 5 year old....and remember, they may come with a few problems, BUT NOTHING that love and patience cant resolve, remember that. ....You are just what some little dog out there needs. good luck, and take your time. The dog thanks you in advance!!

Here is a small dog rescue fair that is happening October 27th. Search Google for "New Jersey small dog rescue" for other ideas.
On petfinder.com you can search by location, size of dog, and age of dog. I think that would probably be perfect for you.
Good luck!

A rescue or shelter will be the only option if you are looking for cheap and healthy. Cheap from a breeder will probably mean sick.

I got a dog 10 months ago that was abandoned on the beach. Why would you want to buy a pedigree dog when there are such sweet dogs around?

Look in shelters. I have a purebred Bulldog and a Komondor, both from shelters, both happy, healthy and young.

you can try your local dog pound/animal shelter/humane society. Prices are usually affordable and animals are vaccinated and must be spay/neutered to prevent overpopulation.
