so, i am thinking of fostering a dog that was rescued from a puppy mill a few months ago. she was diagnosed with brucellosis when initially taken to the vet. she has been spayed. i do not know what tests were run on her or if she had a blood culture done.

now, assuming that she has been on a course of antibiotics, what would be the risk to my other dogs? my other dogs btw are all spayed and neutered.

tom1- yes brucellosis can be spread o humans, but it is rare and involves handling aborted fetuses, placenta, and vaginal secretions after abortion. this is a spayed dog we are talking about. the disease can be spread through urine and saliva, but again to humans that way is very rare. with good housekeeping skill, human transmission is generally not an issue.

I read the other answers and there are some truths in all of them. It can be transmitted by handeling or coming into contact with fecal matter as well as other waste. it is tramsmitted from mom to pups through milk. This is not cureable, only amnagable. If it were me I would uqize my own vet that cares for your dogs and heed what they have to say. i think the dog might be better off in a home with no other pets but then your vet should be the final answer on that, I would think.

Canine Brucelosis is a canine STD.
I haven't heard of it being transmitted in any other way, than sexual activity.
You will feel safer if you speak to any vet about this. They should be able to answer from just a phone call. If they don't, then call another.
Edit:I just read this on a veterinary site: "The majority of bacteria in infected dogs are secreted in semen and vaginal secretions, but bacteria may be present in milk, urine and saliva as well. Thus any bodily fluids can infect another dog.".

So, if that is so, you should have the dog tested, to make certain that she tests clear of the disease.
In my community, the test costs $60.

Brucellosis in a pet can only be transmitted through breeding and if all your4 pets are neutered and spayed I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Hi, Don't know that one so looked it up in the dictionary it says: a bacterial disease chiefly affecting cattle and causing undulant fever in humans - origin - from Brucella , the name of the bacterium responsible, as I say I do not kown that one but yes get a vet to check her out and good luck

TALK TO YOUR VET - in fact I'd demand a neg test before letting the dog through my door. I HAVE heard of it passing through urine contact.
The state vet can order an infected dog destroyed so I would not take the chance with my dogs.

A dog can not be cured of Brucellosis, and neither can you!!!!!!!! Brucellosis can only be "managed". Any body fluid has the potential to spread the disease.
So please don't bring the dog anywhere near my house.
