I am giving my puppy (5 months old) the frontline plus from the vet. But every time I hold her I break out, so I am looking for something herbal that will not hurt her or the enviroment.

I have already been tested for allergies. I am allergic to dogs but not a contact allergy. Also, I could not use the frontline when we first got her because she was too young and I did not break out when I held her. So I still stick to it being the frontline since nothing else has changed.

Do you have a problem with fleas? We don't and we also do not dump harmful chemicals on our dogs as a preventative. If my dogs ever got fleas I would treat them for them but I am not putting that stuff on them for no reason.
If you have a flea problem check out the site http://www.purelypets.com

We have used the HW stuff to prevent heartworms for many years. I LOVE this site and their natural products.

Tony doesn't know what he is talking about. There are PLENTY of natural remedies for parsites. I have used them for years now.
Revolution has been known to kill and injure many dogs.. Why isn't Tony telling you that? He just doesn't WANT to believe there are other ways to keep a dog healthy besides dousing them with chemicals on a regular basis... But I assure you there are ways to have a healthy dog with out poisoning them. :) It's a no brainer.

Herbal medicines don't work. Also, Frontline is applied topically to the shoulders of the dog and absorbed systemically. You cannot get a rash caused by Frontline from holding the dog as the Frontline is internally absorbed and it is the treated blood that kills the fleas. I would suggest you are allergic to the dog itself, or the shampoo you bath the dog in. Try a nice oatmeal base shampoo and cream rinse. Consider trying Revolution instead of Frontline. And of course, you could see your doctor and be allergy tested yourself.

Yup, something herbal probably wouldn't hurt her on the environment. But it also wouldn't kill fleas!

I'm thinking perhaps you're allergic to the puppy rather than the product. But just try switching products - Revolution, Advantage and Advocate are all different chemicals to Frontline, so try then before you turn to herbal (i.e cease treating your dog)

And in what way do you think spot-ons hurt the environment? Or your dog for that matter?

No. You need to use the proper medication or you can make then terribly ill. Over the counter stuff can be harmful as well even though it's made for puppies. Ask about Frontline. Remember, you can only put 1 dose of the liquid behind the neck treatment every 30 days. If you dose them 2 times with that stuff within 30 days, you can kill them.

I have heard that you can give dogs garlic products to ward off fleas, but I have never tried it. Some will say garlic is harmful, but I've seen it listed in several high quality natural dog foods.

I have used Revolution on my dog for 2 1/2 yrs and my 2nd dog for 6 mos without any problems -- and no fleas or ticks.

I disagree with Freedom. Ask your vet about "Revolution" and give it a try. There is nothing "natural" or home made that would protect your dog from parasites...internal or external.
Freedom : I don't wanna get into a pissing contest. However, I have also suggested "ask your vet...."
IMHO, all the "natural" stuff is crap and just a way to milk money from well meaning people.
I have also never met an owner who's dog got harmed by Revolution.
