I hear alot of people throw around the slang "backyard breeder". Ive read many many posts regarding their vile selfish money grubbing nature. I even read one question seeking a new name for them so that irresponsible pet owners would be more willing to own up to their dirty deeds and actually consider themselves one. I read alot of really nasty comments. I saw alot of name calling and blaming. I noticed many long lists detailing what they are, what they do and why they deserve the worst corridors of hades. What I have NOT seen is a list of things that qualify breeders as "responsible" or "professional". Please enlighten the uneducated masses and explain what defines one, versus the other.

A dog breeder would like to give me a dog as a gift. I would let my sister have it. She has three kids, very playful ones and they live in a suburban setting. She may not have the time to walk the dog that often although the dog can have a yard to go around with. She would need a dog which is both playful with kids but very territorial (would do as 'sentry' at night or when nobody is at home). Long-haired breeds are a no-no to her. Any breed that might do?

I have a 14 yr. old shih tzu adopted from a shelter at age 10. I am thinking of buying a shih tzu puppy. I have no idea of what exactly is crate training a puppy as my dog was already potty trained when I got him.

What is this all about and how do I do it? I'm at home almost all the time so would I really even need to crate train?

Thanks in advance.

Hi please nice answers only. My gorgeous kelpie gave birth to 3 puppies this morning and all are feeding off her and she is walking around getting exercise and pats of congratulations then she will lay down and clean them and feed them again. Does this all sound normal as I have never had puppies before this young. Im so proud of her. Also the Dad comes near her she growls is that normal aswell. Does it sound like she is doing okay?.
I am feeding her more often does she need anything special in her diet?. She eats very well all home cooked meat, vegies, and pasta. Should I separate the dad from her?.

This is so gross I can hardly type it. I am thinking about getting rid of my dogs because i can hardly look at them without throwing up. The dogs are eatting each others poop. Sometimes they eat it as its coming out.

OH MY GOD I TYPED IT! If you have any help that you can give in this matter I would appreciate it. I may have to put them down if this continues. I cant even let them in the house now!

I wanted to find out from Great Dane owners how long their dogs lived? Did they ever bloat in their lives? Any surgies? How much did you feed a day? What type of food?
I have a 2 1/2 year old Great Dane that i've been through hell with.. He's had bloat, 2 knee surgeries, is deaf, has seperation anxiety, cannot eat hard food for some odd reason anymore (happend after his 2nd knee surgery, he starts to choke), dog aggressive (used to be fine around them then oneday snapped) and used to be VERY human aggressive. At one point I considered putting him to sleep because of his health problems and aggression issues. He's a great dog, but I don't think I will get another. He's come a long way since a pup with his temperment issues since he's from a backyard breeder :( Tell me about yours!

we took her to the vet back when the problem started, and she got cortisone shot. Vet said to give her benedryl, so have been trying that. It helps but not much.

To all of you who give a thumbs down to anyone who answers a ? @ Pitbulls with anything but a " they are the best dog ever and only bad owners cause them to attack" basis....

What would you want done if a sweet, precious, never would attack ANYTHING, pitbull killed or attacked your child?

I'm not advocating destruction of the pitbull or it's owners, I just want to know how you would react if it was your kid??? And please don't give me "my dog would never do that"! That's NOT the ?. I don't even mean YOUR dog, but would your opinion of the breed change if it happened to you or someone you loved?

I have been looking around for small dogs. I herd that Chihuahuas were really lovable but they are so expensive. Yorkies are more in my price range and I think they're just as cute. Dose any one know how they are as pets? How are the personalities? And how big do they get? I herd they don't get very big. Call me high mainnance but i want a dog I can carry around with me when I go shoppin :-)

We have had a 16 week old staffie for 3 days, he is the most placid and docile dog. However, our 4 year old is over excited and the pupp has started to get a little too playful with him for me. He jumps on his back and uses his mouth to tug at his clothes. I am a newbie to this and this sudden change in behaviour looked aggressive to me and has scared me. I sternly told the dog NO and removed him from my son, which worked no problem but I feel worried now. Any advice please
