We fold it up in a piece of lunch meat. Our dogs gobble it so fast they don't realize they even took a pill.
Peanut butter sticks to the roof of their mouth so they would find the pill.
Hot dogs work too if the pill is small enough. But I have really good luck with folding it up real good in the lunch meat.
If all else fails put the pill on the very back of their tongue, quickly close their mouth and hold it together. Hold their nose in an upward position and rub their neck in a downward motion a few times and they should swallow it.

My chihuahua is very picky. He would not chew up his Heartguard pill for nothing. For a long time I would have to take a fork and crush it up and mix it with some kind of mashed meat. The vet gave me a sample of the soft chewy Heartguard and he loves it and chews it up with no problems.
Good Luck =)

A few others have it right, but I dont drop the pill in. I open the mouth put the pill in the back with a little push and close the mouth. My wife is a Vet Asst. so shes way better at it than me but my 18month old APBT has seasonal allergies, grass makes him itchy and his feet between the pads gets pink and irritated so he gets 2 benedryl a day. You have to let the dog know that you ARE giving it a pill and to just deal with it. I always give my dog an ice cube afterwards also.

Depends on the size of the pill actually. The method DP suggested works very well for us if the pill is on the small side. But if it's a 'horse' pill, we usually use cheese or peanut butter on a cracker!

With some dogs all you have to do is drop the pill on the floor and it's inhaled.

Cheese is good, but the stuff has to be soft and not crumbly or it'll loose the pill.

Hot dog chunks are MUCH easier! Dogs love them too and they won't cause the gas/farting that cheese often does to a dog.

I have done the cheese thing. A lot of times she will just eat the cheese and drop the pill on the floor so I end up just tilting her head back and putting it in the back of her throat.

My dog use to swallow cheese whole or small peices of sausage. So I found that the best method to give my dog a pill he had to swallow. I rolled it up on the cheese or stuck it in the meat and down it went.

Your vet can show you how to give a pill to a dog. There are a number of ways. I had med/large dogs. So my technique is to put them between my legs (since they tend to wiggle and not want to take the pill), head front, lift the head up in order to open the mouth and drop the pill as far back as possible. Then drop the head down clamping the mouth shut and rub the throat in a swallowing motion in order to get them to swallow it - instead of spitting it out back.

I always use pill pockets, which is what my vet recommended to me. You get a packet of 50 or so soft balls of dog treat and you just wrap the pill up. The dog probably wont event mind that the pills in there. You can order them here, this is the brand I use.

It's really easy for a dog to choke on a big chunk of cheese, so I don't recommend that. I got a cheap pill crusher from the drug store, and usually mix that with a little peanut butter or regular butter, something the doggy enjoys the taste of, but is too sticky to spit out.

A piece of cheese or Pill Pockets. My dog really likes the pill pockets and eats them right away.
