To all of you who give a thumbs down to anyone who answers a ? @ Pitbulls with anything but a " they are the best dog ever and only bad owners cause them to attack" basis....
What would you want done if a sweet, precious, never would attack ANYTHING, pitbull killed or attacked your child?
I'm not advocating destruction of the pitbull or it's owners, I just want to know how you would react if it was your kid??? And please don't give me "my dog would never do that"! That's NOT the ?. I don't even mean YOUR dog, but would your opinion of the breed change if it happened to you or someone you loved?

You people really don't get it do you...Humans CAN reason, dogs don't. Black people were not bred to be killers. Dogs are bred for qualities that suit the human most...in the case of a Pitbull, it was to hunt & kill. The dogs that hunted and killed best were bred to each other, concentrating the quality the human was looking for. Yeah, it probably is a humans fault, but what do we do now that we don't need these dogs to hunt & kill? And I pray that nobody ever loses a loved one to a vicious animal, but those of you who said you would not blame the dog, but rather your child, should be forced to become sterile. Get real and quit treating your dogs like they are human.

doglover10, I challenge you to name 10 breeds that can be mistaken as "pit". And if you say something stupid like "LAB" you are graspng at straws. Anyone who owns a Pit knows wht is a Pit and what isn't.
My real point here was to examine how many people were knowledgeable about behavior, both dog and human. Most of you failed. When you treat a dog like a human, you get disaterous results. Doggie racism has ABSOLUTELY no relation to the racial stereotyping of humans. If my dog attacked my child, I'd get my frigin gun and kill the son of a b*tch! Then, if my kid survived, he'd get an informed discussion about the behavior leading up to the incident to prevent it from happening again. Too bad Petsmart doesn't train humans!

Wow, somebody that gets it! Dogs were bred for being good at one thing instincts and all. For pits that is DOG FIGHTING and aggressive behavior. The best fighters get bred. And this is still happening all over the US> But asking pit supporters is useless. They are all in denial. They bought the breed for its toughness and bad reputation then when they defend it they say its just like any other dog! How absurd. YThe stats dont lie. Most critical maulings are done by pits. The second one is the rottweiller but a distant second. Breeds will do what they were bred for. Humans are not bred for certain traits like that so their "racist" reasonoing is also vety absurd.

Wow lady, you need to calm down. People answered your question... and you reem them out for it? You really are stepping on nails with a question like this, but here's my answer:
I STILL would not blame the dog. I do not believe in the instable mental state of something that cannot process intelligent thoughts like humans. I'm sorry to say though, that American Pitbull Terriers, ARE of the terrier group, and were bred to have agression towards a specific thing. Now for a terrier of a pitbull's size, often that can mean small children (albeit that was not the original breeding intention), other dogs (especially!) and the lot. It's unfortunate, but pitbulls should not be owned by everyone, and there's a lot of education that needs to be done. Until then, we have to blame the fact that the owners took on a dog that they do not know how to handle (whether abused or not! When I first got my first pitbull, I was extremelly inexperienced, and such produced a very high strung dog. I would NEVER allow her anywhere near anyone without me around... She's too jumpy... With my second one, he's extremelly stable and calm... ) and when someone doesn't know how to handle a dog with the pitbull's magnitude, it can cause great destruction.
EDIT: And when you say test the knowledge of behavior both human and dog alike and everyone failed....
Compared to what??!? YOUR "knowledge", YOUR beliefs? You are providing a very jaded questioning here, and you got the answers the majority of the population believes, not just radical nuts like yourself. And it still did not suit you? Tsk tsk... This just proves you cannot change an already made up mind. So why bother asking, if you weren't willing to learn.

No my opinion wouldn't change, even if it was my child that was attacked or injured. And the reason is that I know that for a fact that one dog doesn't represent a whole breed of dogs. That would be the same as blaming or hating every man alive if one man attacked me. For the life of me I can't understand how people can't see this.
ADDED:
Ok if you want to take outlook, then pit bulls were if fact bred to be non aggressive to humans. That was done on purpose, not accident. So if you are referring to behavior bred into a dog, pits are not by nature aggressive towards people. I can't recall ever treating any of my dogs as if they were human. They eat dog food from a dog bowl, don't use my toilet, don't eat my food, sleep on the floor, etc. I'm not sure what you're getting at. I'd have the same reaction to a toy poodle attacking my child as a pit. Those little breeds could kill or severly injure a small child or infant as easy as a pit. Dogs, just like people, are individuals. An attack on my child would only change my outlook on the individual

Honestly, I don't think it would change my opinion of a whole breed. That is like asking if a black man attacked me, would I hate all black people? No, I wouldn't, because I realize that 99% of black people are wonderful and just because 1 made a mistake doesn't mean the others should suffer for it. The same goes for dogs. Most pitbulls are wonderful, and the problem with the bad ones stem from bad ownership and bad breeding, not the breed as a whole.
It's hard to say what you would do when you are not in that situation, but I try to be objective about everything, and I try to judge the individual, not a whole race or breed.
Added: First you asked if our minds would be changed about pitbulls if one attacked our child. NOW you go back and say you are trying to find out if people understand dog and human behavior. THAT was NOT your original question or even point. I understand dog behavior quite well, do you?
Pitbulls were bred to fight, but they were also bred to be totally NON-HUMAN aggressive. For generations, a human aggressive dog was not bred and was usually destroyed. Human aggression is not part of the pitbull's temperament at all. Any human aggressive pit is obviously the result of total mishandling or bad breeding, which can happen with any breed.
You totally contradicted yourself. First you said:
"those of you who said you would not blame the dog, but rather your child, should be forced to become sterile. Get real and quit treating your dogs like they are human."
Then you said that if a dog attacked, your child would get a discussion of how to prevent it again, meaning you know that a child can provoke a dog:
"If my dog attacked my child, I'd get my frigin gun and kill the son of a b*tch! Then, if my kid survived, he'd get an informed discussion about the behavior leading up to the incident to prevent it from happening again."
I don't think you even understand what you are talking about.

A gentle well-trained dog of any breed turning on it's owner or on people (child or adult)that are not strangers is extremely rare. You know as well as I do that serious incidents have happened with different breeds of dogs. The more common the breed or mix, the more incidents there will be that are reported, but the media definitely goes for blood when "pit bull" or "pit bull type" is mentioned. If my very gentle and well trained Pit Bull Terrier suddenly snapped and mauled a child, I would have her euthanized and then have a necropsy performed to find out what led to her "snapping". It would be a loss that would floor me, both with regards to the child and to the dog.
But substitute PIT BULL in your question with any other breed that is powerful. This hypothetical question would apply to any breed.
Labs are more apt to bite people than Pit Bull Terriers are. Either can bite with deadly or serious consequences. Either, if well trained and socialized, would be a case that is an anomaly if a child was mauled or killed by either breed and was not an abused dog.
I believe in supervising children around any breed of dog. I wouldn't change my opinion of the breed of dog according to incident.
It would be hard for awhile. I would think seeing the same breed would evoke memories of horrible loss. I'd hope I could work through it and wouldn't take it out on the breed as a whole.

No my opinion of the breed would not change.
It is unfair to judge a breed based on the actions of one.
If an African American killed someone you loved, would that make all African Americans bad?
Wow you really know nothing about pits do you. Pit bulls were bred to fight other dogs, even in the heat of a fight the owners could go in and break the dogs up without getting bit. The dogs that did bite a human hand were the ones that were destroyed.
Take a look at the pitbull history. This dog was once loved in this country. It was so good with children it became known as the nanny the dog. Remember Petey from Little Rascals, he was a pit bull.
Let's not forget Stubby, the most decorated dog in military history, who was also a pit bull.
I urge you to read this http://www.forpeteyssake.com/FallFromGracePitBullArticle.doc.pdf
Finally no dogs can't reason, but people can, its the owners of these dogs who are really to blame, not the breed.

I am not a person that is all thumbs up yeee haaa on the pit bull.. I can take them or leave them.. But I am against banning any breed of dog.. I have seen already what it has done in our province.. Pit bulls are banned.. But hasn't stopped the breeding of pit bulls or pit bull like breeds.. It has pushed it all underground. Now these people continue to breed, produce puppies abut they are unable to provide proper vet care.. Not only are these dogs likely not even wormed, but they are NOT getting vaccinated and even worse, they are not getting rabies shots. They can't cause as soon as they turn up at the vet with a pit bull puppy, everyone knows that they have a dog that is banned.. So you know what.. Now these dogs are out there and they are more susceptible to disease and they are putting MY dogs at risk.. They are good candidates for rabies, if they should come across it. in their underground travels..NOW they are putting MY life in jeopardy... NOT because I am at risk of being bitten but because I am at risk of being bitten by a dog that is not vaccinated against rabies.
Doesn't matter which breed they go after and ban, it won't stop people from breeding them, it'll just push them underground too.. Making the whole problem even worse.
When we used to board dogs, it wasn't the pit bull, it wasn't the rottie, it wasn't the shepherds etc.. It was the Spaniels and the JRT.. those small dogs that would bite the hell out of you if you gave them any chance at all..
I don't have a kid and I don't have a pit bull.. but I can tell you that if ANY breed of dog, whether pit bull, rottie, spaniel or anything came after my dog and attacked it.. It would be game over for the dog, and the owner would be next on the list...
People in general have to be more responsible for themselves, their kids and their dogs.. People are constantly blaming others, they refuse to take blame for their own problems, they wander around justifying their dog's horrible behavioural problems... They need to be more responsible.. If you aren't going to be a responsible dog owner, and keep your dog under control, and keep your dog from hurting others, not only should you lose your dog, you should lose the right to own a dog and you should be charged a hefty fine to make you think more about how irresponsible you have been..
People are the problem, doesn't matter the breed, and what they are doing.. If it isn't the owner, that is causing the dog to be the way it is, then it's the idiot breeder who bred the dog.. PEOPLE are the problem..

Why does this always have to be about a pit bull?
Why can't you just say "dog".
Breed is irrelavent.
With over 73 million dogs currently residing in the U.S., the actions of a miniscule percentage of dogs in a community cannot be used to define an entire population of dogs/owners.
Newspaper and media accounts of dog attacks are often seriously flawed and/or incomplete recounting of the events and circumstances that directly contributed to a dog attack.
Statistics citing the number of attacks by particular breeds of dogs DO NOT reveal any valuable or applicable information on the causes of indvidual cases of aggression and the prevention of dog attacks.
What makes you so prejudice against Pit Bull types exactly?
And if ANY of my dogs ever maliciously bit anyone, It would not change my mind on any of their breeds. I would have them euthanized though.
*To the person refering to game breeding making the dogs have a tendency for agression -Human Agression is COMPLETELY different than Dog Agression. When people breed pit bulls for professional fighting, they will kill any dog that bites a person because there has to be people in the pit with the dogs while they fight, and when the dog is in the heat of the moment they don't want a dog that will bite them. They purposely breed OUT human agression. Do your research before you spread your ignorance.*

as alot of ppl say it won't change my opinion not all pits are like that just cause on did it doesn't mean all do it i mean come on most pitbull haters hate them because of the stories they have heard and seen on the news and from other ppl and that person has never been in contact with a pitbull.there are 28+ breeds mistaken for pitbulls so most of the time u see a dog on the news and they say a "pitbull"attacked the person they aren't going to say it the truth like i could of been an American Bulldog they are similar so yeah there is my answer and if u don't like pitbulls never ever e-mail me.
oh and when u said stop treating dogs like humans just because they aren't doesn't mean they don't have feelings u insensitive jerk y would u say that they are practically humans two they may have more hair/fur and may stand on 4 legs and talk and communicate different doesn't mean they aren't the same as us and don't deserve to be treated like us >:(

Pitbulls were NEVER ever bred to attack people - handlers were in the ring, bathing the dogs beforehand. Pulling the dogs apart - ANY pitbull that showed human aggressiveness was immediately hauled out back and shot - I am not kidding. The breed was intended to fight other dogs. They were not ever bred for human aggression. So I think you have your facts a little screwed up.
Through backyard and irresponsible breeding, and breeding for any kind of toughness, some of the dogs are human aggressive, but that's not the breed - that's poor breeding.

I have worked with all different breeds of dogs my entire life. If MY pit bull were to bite someone, or do horrible damage, it wouldn't change my outlook on the breed as a whole. But it would change my opinion of my individual dog. I keep a close eye on my dog, and she has strict rules, so I doubt anything like that WOULD happen, but if it did I would take the proper actions, what ever that might be. But from working with animals, I can tell you that ANY dog breed can be aggressive and to horrendous damage to a person or another dog. I was attacked by a golden retriever, he went right after my face, and I still have scars on my face from the attack. But this ONE dog who has done damage in my life has not changed my opinion of an entire breed. I know that MOST golden retrievers who have responsible stable owners are loving family companions, as with pit bulls. And from working with animals, I have been bit by many other breeds (beagles, labs, poodles, dachshunds....). Two of them were rottweilers. But even though I was bit by two rottweilers, I have met SO many more who are just big teddy bears. And I can tell you that the two that bit me were Not in responsible hands. But anyways, even though I was personally bit by two, I still want one of my own some day in the future, because I know what wonderful dogs they Can be when they are in the right home.
There are a lot of things that people don't understand about pit bulls and rottweilers. They don't understand their history, how they were developed, and why people love them so much. If pit bulls and rottweilers, and which ever other breed you may consider aggressive by nature, were actually monsters and killing machines, all of us pit bull/rottie lovers and owners wouldn't be here today to stick up for them.
You said "Name 10 breeds that can be mistaken for a pit bull" Well, here are 26:
http://www.pbrc.net/poppysplace/games/AdultFindabull/findpitbull_v4.html
Not to mention all the Mixed Breeds...
