I am thinking of adopting a young bull mastiff/akita mix. I have no kids, 1 cat, 1 bird, big fenced yard and reasonably large house. I am near a big park with trails I plan on walking with dog daily and have neaxt door neighbors who have an akita purebred. What kinds of problems have you had with your big dog? What do you think is best food for them? What are your average vet bills? How is your dog with your other pets? Any info you can share would be greatly appreciated.

Pet overpopulation is a growing problem:
There are 45 cats and dogs for every one person born.
Only one out of 10 dogs born ever find a permanent home.
Only one out of 12 cats born ever find a permanent home.
800 dogs and cats are destroyed each HOUR in the U.S. because there are not enough homes for them!

Please consider these numbers when you.....

consider letting your pet breed.
neglect having your pet spayed or neutered.
consider buying a pet from a breeder or pet store.
condemn different rescue organizations for euthanizing adoptable pet.
consider a pet for your home. Make sure you are willing and able to make a lifetime commitment to that pet!

I was just wondering if any of you bought a puppy from a good breeder and after you brought it home, he/she became ill. Can you share that experience with me please?

Ok, I was just now walking to the store, it's 1 in the morning but yeah, anyway, I saw this average-size dog laying at the end of the alley. (Not in the alley way, it was in the grass). And he looked like he was dying. I mean, it seemed like he couldn't move his body at all except for his head. He just laid there and didn't move at all, and I was even petting him and stuff. On the way back, he was still in the same spot. What should I have done? I hated just leaving him there, but I don't know what to do at 1 in the morning.

A couple of hours ago I was bitten by a dog (German Shepard). I had to do something because we'd already ran the dog off twice for chasing the kids at this gathering. it came back and was chasing a little girl who was running and screaming and crying her mother was doing nothing so I ran out and grabbed the dog so that he wouldn't bite her or knock her down. He smelled my food in my opposite hand and tried to jump at me. I tried to lead it away from the children but when he failed to leave them alone and follow me out of our yard I grabbed him from behind the little girl again and thats when he latched onto my arm. I have 2 large and 2 medium sized puncture wounds as well as multiple scrapes. the two larger woulnds have just stopped bleeding. The ownder's were not at home (or just wouldn't answer the door). The car in the yard had rims on it but no tag and there was no name on the mailbox. Should I take pictures, see a Dr., go back to their house? What?

my 3 dogs sleep confined in the kitchen and the storage room behind the kitchen has been converted into their "bed room" with their baskets etc.
one of these 3 doggies is a puppy so he still has quite week bladder control. so my friend said not to leave any water out after their last walk at night.
is that ok? i just feel so sorry for them as if they are thirsty they can't have any water? is it ok?
thanks

I cook every night for my family, and my dog is use to eating human food, at first it's my son that fed him scraps under the table, then he started begging everytime I cook. I'm very happy he loved my cooking because my husband and son sure don't appreciate it.
But my dog's vet said it's bad for him to eat human food, because of too much salt, he hair fell out on his head. How do I get him to eat dog food now that he's so used to human food?

My previous question http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AspcoRU3C5O80IQh4hk1WfnL7BR.;_ylv=3?qid=20070929183357AAmqCkw
I didint mean to offend anyone nor was i trying to judge anyone on Yahoo. I guess in life you are more likely to be more understanding to people you know. You take into account their opinion more ,not always agreeing with their ideas but maybe realizing why they feel a particular why. I just wanted everybody to look at something from a different perspective and then make up your opinion.
Now be honest have you ever answered a question differently based on your association with the asker. For example would you be more understanding ,to someone you knew on Yahoo ,then a complete starnger? Also do you tend to see the best in people or do you tend to make quick judgements? (I know sometimes ,you dont hear the whole story so you just judge on what you know) Any thoughts or opinions on the matter appeciated.

Or do they search online and then copy & paste as "their" answer? I mean come on people, when your answer is like the whole length of the page when you scroll down, you know you didn't write it!

i cant help but to notice that there is a double standard for some people on yahoo dogs. some of the more "famous" users post sacarstic questions on here and give sacarstic answers. then everyone gives them a thumbs up , and answer the question nicely but when a lesser known user asks the same question or gives the same answer they get thumbs down and nasty comments. its basically saying one thing and then doing another.even if you were just being sacarstic , not everyone on here knows that. ive also noticed many people on here are very "clicky" and only agree with their contacts or only choose the best answer if its given by a top contribuator.
has anyone else noticed this? do you think this is true or not? all opinions welcomed

I went this past week to three shelters. I am looking to give a good home to a shih tzu or shih tzu mix, any age, boy or girl. from 8 weeks to 15 yrs.

I was approved at all three but at the one, the director said "aren't you being a bit snobby with having to 'just have' a shih tzu or shih tzu mix?"

I was floored! I told her that I was not a snob for liking and wanting a certain breed or breed mix and that she had an attitude problem. Also told her that there are plenty of shih tzu and shih tzu mixes needing homes and that she might want to find another line of work where she didn't have to deal with humans at all and people walk out of shelters and buy because of people like her in shelter work.

The other two shelters were fine and put me on the list for what I was looking for. I had to prove income, living situation (I own) vet I would be using and reasons for wanting to adopt a dog.

Am I a snob or was this shelter director (who btw did approve me) just being nasty?

We were given a stray dog by my aunty and we had it for around 18 mths. We took the dog to the vet because it had a paw infection, and when the dog was scanned, it had a microchip in it and the vet rang the owner and she came to pick it up. We were devastated because we were really attached to it. We didn't know it was owned by someone else and now the owner has been harassing us to pay her $1500 for the vet bill, and if we don't pay her she will take us to court. I want to know legally am I liable to pay for the vet bill now that the dog is not mine anymore? She threatened me over the phone that I will lose the court battle and I will pay severly. I know I will have to consult a lawyer but I want to ask other yahoo readers if I am liable and do I have a chance of winning? She came over to my house and demanded payment from my parents over this and they are really distressed by all this. Can the readers help me with this?
