What is flea dirt?
Flea dirt is made of bits of dried blood excreted by feeding fleas that accumulate in the fur of a flea-infested animal. The presence of flea dirt in an animal's coat, or bedding, or on a flea comb is a sure sign of an infestation. If you're unsure whether or not you have real flea dirt, drop some into water. If the bits dissolve, turning the water red, it's flea dirt.

Let's review your flea control options:
These are only general suggestions for flea control. For a complete list see our flea control article.

(1) Brush or comb the animal frequently to remove adult fleas and look for flea dirt. Shampoo using a good quality flea shampoo to remove the adult fleas that bite.

(2) Treat pet bedding areas with a spray containing the insect growth regulator methoprene. Methoprene prevents immature fleas from developing into adults. This will effectively stop the infestation but won't kill adult fleas.

(3) To kill adult fleas treat animals with a topically-applied flea medication like Frontline Top Spot (active ingredient = fipronil) or Advantage (active ingredient = imidacloprid). Or, continue the flea shampoo weekly, along with daily combing, until no more fleas and flea dirt are found. See our main Flea article for additional details about flea biology and control.

Flea dirt is flea droppings.

It is usually a sign that your dog has a lot of fleas, and they are able to spend a lot of time on your dog. It is also likely that they are laying eggs on your dog as well.

When you bathe your dog, flea droppings will wash off red because of all the blood fleas drink.

Fleas can be harmful to the dog. Too many fleas can cause anemia by drinking too much of the dogs blood. And they also may pass on other parasites if they have been on other dogs before yours.

Make sure you keep your pet on some type of flea medicine, and keep treating your house and yard for fleas.

I am unsure what flea dirt is. Flea saliva and/or flea excrement can give your pet skin allergies, like itching then crazy scratching. I wouldn't think all that's too great for your carpet and furniture either.

Flea dirt is flea poo. It isn't harmful in itself, but it's a sure sign that fleas are present, and they can be harmful.

It's not any more harmful than any other feces. However, it's what the flea larvae feed on along with the bits of dry skin on your pet, so it's good idea to comb it out or wash it out of your pets coat.

It's not so much harmful, as it's a clear indicator that your dog has fleas. You should talk to your vet about a monthly treatment.

No, it is actually flea "poop". It's disgusting, but not harmful.
