If you mean by a medium sized dog 20 to 30 lbs then a Beagle is great. Mine is a mutant and is close to 40 lbs, not fat, just big. He is so friendly and loves everyone. His name is Snoopy but I call him Sad Sack because of the long ears and big droopy brown eyes. He is a clown and does a lot of funny things. Like getting on my bed to take a nap between the two pillows, on top of one and the other on top of him. Sandwiched between them.
If you want a bit bigger, 40 to 60 lbs, then an American Pit Bull Terrier is a great family dog. Mine love everyone and don't know the meaning of stranger. Honey is 4 years old and Lilly is 4 months old. They only growl at each other when they are playing, never in anger. The APBT at one time was the most popular family dog in the country. They were known as "The Nanny Dog" because they are so great with children, even babies. The can be aggressive to other dogs, but with proper training the can be taken care of. My Pits, Beagle and Chi/Rat Terrier get along great.

There are so many to choose from. You have to really look at your lifestyle and try to match one to suit.

Look at how much grooming, exercise and attention a certain breed needs and see whether you can provide them with that.

Great medium sized dogs that are great for families are beagles, cocker spaniels, staffys and if you go a little bigger then golden ret. & labs are always a good choice.

Well everyone has their tastes, but I find little dogs to be just as good as any other dog. Maybe a Beagle would be good for you. Do some research, look at a shelter or on petfinder.com and find the perfect companion for your lifestyle.

I raise collies and cocker spaniels,,but find the collies to be the best family dog, they love their people & will watch over the kids, keep them in the yard. Actually, they are not all that big either,,,usually about 50-60 pounds.

Go to petfinder.com. They will have links to all of the shelters and rescue groups in your area.

I like mutts and mixed breeds for family dogs myself, but there are just so many choices that fit this description.

I'll bet if you and your family go to a shelter, you will find a dog that will steal your heart.

Good luck

Beagle. Hands down. The very very best dog for a family. Beagles are friendly, but not too hyper...intelligent and faithful and very loyal. Also, they have short hair and do not shed a lot. And I personally think they are so very cute.
