I am doing research on dogs, as I am seriously considering getting one. All I was wondering was whether the spaying procedure absolutely stops the heat cycle (especially the associated bleeding) once done.

I have 2 female German Shepherds 1 year old. One has loose skin that moves all around when you rub her and the other has real tight skin that doesn't move much at all when we rub her. Does anyone know what causes this? They are both close in weight with the loose skin dog at 65 and the tight skin dog at 70.

If mother dog doesn't nurse will her milk sacs like... blow up? Sort of like if you don't milk cows they die.

What is a good type of food for pups to eat if they don't need to be nursed anymore?

My dog is two (no longer a puppy). But she continues to suffer from an involuntary behavior most often associated with puppies -- submissive urination. Every day I come home and she is happy to see me -- so she pees. (Note: I do NOT make a 'big deal' out of greeting her. But just seeing me sets her off.) When I get out the leash to go for a walk -- she pees. If I walk around a corner in the house and surprise her unexpectedly with direct eye contact -- she pees. Vet says nothing physically wrong with her. I have had her for 9 months. She may have been abused before I got her, but my training methods have been entirely gentle. I even took her to obedience training, but that has made things WORSE. She obeys, but pees on every single command (sit, down, come, etc.) This is an involuntary behavior, I understand -- but if it does not end soon, we are going to have to part ways! Help!

i found out that my pedigree dog, a yorkshire terrier, was playing in the backyard when a nextdoor chihuahua broke in and pregnated her. we were planning to set her up with a yorkshire stud but now, we can't do that. is there anyway to abort the puppies at a pet clinic or something without spaying her? this may sound kinda bad, but no negative answers please. she was our first puppy and we feel really bad. thanks

Well it is a good idea to get a dog from a shelter and i am all for it but when someone says don't get a dog from a petstore(which i don't agree with them selling them but ..) because they are sick and come from puppy mills..ummm how do you know where the shelter dogs have been? from a home that got them from a store and then gave him up and now he is a great healthy dog because he is in a shelter, Do you get what i am saying? No matter were a dog comes from its a dog. Who cares if they have some kind of problems..because every dog need love..and i am sick of hearing stupid people saying and typing stupid things.

I'm just trying to get as much information about chihuahua's as possible...
I have two cats, one is almost a year old and the other is 4. I read somewhere that most chihuahuas are very territorial with other dogs. I haven't really read that much about chihuahuas and cats. :) Somebody help my clueless self! Thank you!

Anybody ever use the oral care gel from Petzlife? Supposedly it gets rid of tartar and such, but I've used it for about 2 weeks daily with NO affects whatsoever.. in fact, seems to be getting a bit worse! I brush her teeth a few times a week, although I have only done it once since using the Petzlife. Also, are there any ways to have someone clean a dog's teeth without anesthesia? I live in the LA area.. My dog is ok with sticking stuff in her mouth.. someone needs to hold her head, but she doesn't bite or anything. I've scraped her teeth myself, and had someone else do it also, and she was ok with it. Anyway, anyone know another product that will help get rid of dog tartar? Or a good regimen for tartar removal? Or ANY help at all??!! Lol, thanks in advance. Oh, and no, she doesn't eat dry food, and will not. She eats homemade food, and chews on some cow hooves a couple times a week. That's it in the chewing dept. I also sometimes wipe her teeth after a meal w/a wet towel.

I woke up from a nap today and saw that my 1 and a half year old Cocker Spaniel was limping on his left upper paw. now I dont know what he did, but he is having a lot of trouble moving around. I tryed to feel for a break and to see if he would cry when i touched. I couldnt tell nor did he cry. I am having him lay down and keep off it , also it doesnt seem bigger then his other paws. he doesnt seem to want to walk in it at all. now he is licking his paw alot...i am not sure if he just spranged it or really broke it...i did call my vet and that was no help......money is tight so if i can avoid going to the vet just for them to tell me they cant do anything that would be great.

if it is spranged what can I do to help it and what can i do to make him feel better?.....ice? ibpro? help!!

thanks alot

We purchased a dog from a guy a couple of weeks ago. He is a breeder, he breeds dobermans, min-pins, and german shepards. We were told that the puppy we purchased was 12 weeks old, and was considered a family pet, and was wonderful for children. Being new at the dog buying experience, we really thought that a breeder would give us honest information, and being he had been doing this for over 30 years, we chose to believe him. Well, I feel completely mislead. We got the dog home, and she was "okay" with the family the first 2 days. After that, she seemed really skiddish, and she would growl and snarl at my husband and me anytime we'd go near her. We tried and tried to gain this dog's trust, and she starts SNAPPING at us! My daughter was on the couch with me one night, she came up to my daughter, growled, and bit her on the cheek, and my daughter didn't even touch the dog. I will continue below, I am out of room! Please read the rest of the story!

What's a good dog for this? A large house like 2 acres but 1.5 acres is the house itself. 3 teenagers in the family and the parents. Already have the swetest dog ever who is a Newfoundland but a strangly large Newfoundland who weighs 220 lbs. The dog is so so so sweet though. We want the dog for our 11 year old. She was looking for a shih tzu but we found out those are hyper. So whats a great toy dog for this family. The dog has to be very mellow though.

My dog is a 1 1/2 year old male mixed breed. He's very loving and affectionate and likes to just snuggle up next to everyone. He has a weird habit of putting his mouth around the middle of my forearm. He doesn't bite down at all just kind of puts my arm in his mouth for a second and then removes it. He doesn't do this to anyone else in our house but me. He does it at least once a day. Does anyone know why?
