My dog is a 1 1/2 year old male mixed breed. He's very loving and affectionate and likes to just snuggle up next to everyone. He has a weird habit of putting his mouth around the middle of my forearm. He doesn't bite down at all just kind of puts my arm in his mouth for a second and then removes it. He doesn't do this to anyone else in our house but me. He does it at least once a day. Does anyone know why?

He is part German Shepherd. He usually does this when I let him come up on the couch w/me. He's not at all aggressive.
Thanks for all the great answers so far~ Its going to be really hard to choose just one!! =)

It's a calming thing to him ..He is claiming you by doing it..He means no harm and don't discourage it unless you hate it..Mine did same thing..If you watch a special on TV of dogs in the wild you will see them take hold of each others face or tail and not bite..It's kinda like they are holding hands if you want to think of it that way.

Is he nonetheless a doggy? Mouthing is great easy in doggies. If he's an older dogs, it is usually play, yet tough play is which you are able to start up up, no longer him. enforce the no longer something in existence is unfastened application via making him carry out an obedience command till now you provide him his foodstuff, take him for a walk, enable him out of his crate, and so on. this could emphasize which you're in charge, no longer him. while my dogs needs to play, and that i'm agreeable, i visit start up issues with a pretend growl and grabbing his leg.

i had a golden retriever that would do this everyday when i got home from work. usually lead me to the couch, where i had to sit and give her some attention. if the dog is alone for a period of time during the day, he may just need to make sure you are with him. i also was the primary provider for my dog and the vet informed me it was a means of affection and a way for them to reassure themselves.

Is he part German Shepherd? They seem to do that by instinct.
He's just soft-mouth play biting. He likes you!

I think he loves you, or needs something..my flatcoat retriever does that in the middle of the night when she has to go pee, she gently pulls on my arm to lead me to the door

He is dominating you. I love the answers here today. He is trying to exert some dominance and to feel how you react. My dog used to do the same thing, a forehead to forehead discussion later the crap stopped. Stop him from doing it or it will go further and you may not like the results.

He loves you, and knows that is part of you, the part that pets him, gives him food, and takes care of him. You are a lucky dog, pardon the pun.

It sounds like he is trying to get your attention. Does he do this when playing with you also? If so it could be that he wants to play. Either way I would try to discourage this behavior in him.
