www.petfinder.com
You can search for adoptable puppies by breed/gender/size when grown and the shelters and rescue groups will be able to help you find the right match.
Don't make your new friend sleep outside though. Pick up a crate and keep her/him safe.
Good luck! Please adopt!

Each dog lover has a couple of favorite breeds so asking someone to help you choose wouldn't be the wisest way to pick out a puppy. There are great books available that tell you which dogs fit what you need and want in a pet. I'm sure the library has some, if not go to a pet store and talk to a knowledgeable person. Some dogs are great w/kids, some are great protectors, some are frisky others quite. The list goes on and on. It's worth the time and energy to choose the particular type of dog you want because once you get the right dog you will have a friend that will love you just for you. Good luck.

I have a shihtzu/maltese mix. He's great as an indoor lap dog but loves running around outside and taking long walks.
The largest he's been was 11 pounds so he's a small little guy. He's great with little kids, as the shihtzu's are known to be.
I suggest you do a lot of research first on the small breeds. Some are more suseptable to health issues or aren't good for a lot of outside activity.
Don't count out mix breeds either.

I think a Welsh Corgi (or Corgi mix) makes an ideal pet. I had a corgi mix dog for almost 18 yrs. and now I have 2 Corgis, both 1 1/2 yrs. They are small, less than 40 lbs., but sturdy. They have medium-length hair but shedding can be controlled with brushing every couple of days. They are herding dogs, so they are smart and learn quickly. They have a playful personality. If they are brought up around children, they are good with kids. They make excellent watch dogs, but not guard dogs-- they are always alert to unusual things in your yard and will alert you with a growl or bark-- but they don't know a stranger and won't bite (unless maybe they have been abused). (Like other herding dogs, they will "nip" when playing if you allow it.) They are very aware of their place in the family, and if you are the "leader" they will follow you around like, well, puppies.
Beagles bark too much (they are hunting dogs). Terriers are hyper. Cocker Spaniels are pretty but not too smart, and can be cranky. Find someone who has a Welsh Corgi and see for yourself how ideal they are for pets.

I think the best thing to do is research different breeds of small and medium sized dogs.
Next, go to your local Humane Society and ask to see the dogs with the characteristics you like.
The cost of adopting a shelter dog is far less than going to a breeder and you will save a precious life.
My baby came from a shelter. He was well cared for previously, his owners just were unable to keep him.
I am so glad someone suggested that I go to a shelter when I was looking for him.

I think American Cocker Spaniels are good house dogs and are medium sized. I used to have one and he was the sweetest dog in the world. He was a very quiet dog. He was always very affectionate and happy to see me. The only thing is that he shed a lot. The lint roller was my friend! I currently own a Min-Pin/ Chihuahua mix. He is about 8 pounds full grown. Min-Pins tend act like big dogs in little bodies- very headstrong and brave. He is very hyper and requires lots of attention and exercise. He also barks alot but he can be very sweet as well. As far as training goes, I've had a harder time training the Min-Pin Mix. Both breeds of dogs definately show their love for their owners. Good luck!

Pugs, Bishons (Bishon Frises I mean), teacup poodles, chihuahuas all come to mind off the bat. Only thing is Bishons get bored easy and bored dogs destroy houses LOL Most small and miniature breeds are ideal. Hope this helps P.S I wouldnt keep the chihuahua outside unattended though if I were you. Because they're so tiny, they're very fragile and break bones very easily. They also get cold in the winter even indoors so either get him a sweater to wear all the time or a heated dog bed (if you choose to get one obviously) Good luck!!

Bulldogs are the best. They don't need too much walking, and are great even in an apartment. Just make sure you read up a lot about them. They are a little harder then other breeds to take care of. For one, you have to clean their faces as often as possible , use baby wipes. They are the most loyal dogs and are great with children. I've yet to have seen one vicious bulldog

hmm well first thing do you like fluffy breeds such as pomeranian or shihtzu or small hair dogs like chihuhua or dachshund
or medium like keeshond or labs also you will want to think about how much land you have for them to run and how much money you ahve to spend on them, i would suggest a mixed breed not only for less money but also are proven to be more friendly and have less physical problems as in vet appt. They also live longer then pure breeds.
remember that the bigger they are the shorter life span and more they eat.
also jack russels and any sort of terrier are excessively hyper and like to bark a lot, labs are hyper and love water, collies love to run but are great family dogs, german shephers are very territorial and will protect you but re hard to train unless you know what you are doing and are the dominant one. the little dogs are more yippy and are lap dogs not that i am saying large dogs are not lap dogs also, personally i have a chocolate lab that has given us lots of memories and love to our family and we have a german short hair who are very friendly but are very hyper and not ver smart or atleast ares is not. I would go with a collie or lab just cause i love hyper dogs and have good experiences with them.
if you want a small dog go with a dachshund or a pomeranian not a jack russel unless you want a very hyper dog.
i hope that you think of everything and get a great dog that you will love and cherish

Small breeds are never supposed to be kept as outdoor dogs as they can't stand extreme temperatures. This website has a list of medium-sided dogs http://www.animalhospitals-usa.com/dogs/medium-size_dogs.html
along with information that goes for that certain breed. I hope you find your perfect puppy!
