i found out that my pedigree dog, a yorkshire terrier, was playing in the backyard when a nextdoor chihuahua broke in and pregnated her. we were planning to set her up with a yorkshire stud but now, we can't do that. is there anyway to abort the puppies at a pet clinic or something without spaying her? this may sound kinda bad, but no negative answers please. she was our first puppy and we feel really bad. thanks

the answers are great but for those talking about how people will love the small dogs, the chihuahua is really big. about the size of a regular terrier or average sized cocker spaniel.

There is a shot. And actually, you could still let her meet the yorkie. Dogs can have puppies with more than one dad in the same litter. So chances are she will have some chi mixes, but could still have some yorkies.
As far as the abortion, there is a shot available. Or you could just let her carry and sell the puppies that she does have. They still have value, why waste them? You will get less for them due to the mix, but people love small dogs. They will resemble long-haired chis but not shed as much thanks to the yorkie influence. The pregnancy and birth will go fine because both dogs are small. By choosing to kill the pregnancy, you are costing yourself money and putting hormones into your babies system that aren't good for her. Small, toy, dogs are easy to find homes for. They don't maul people.
Do what you want, but I think you are doing yourself a dis-service by ending a healthy pregnancy of wonderful toy dogs.

Okay. Most people say "Oh! You are a bad owner letting that happen!" but it was an accident. You can terminate the pregnancy by visiting your vet. You would be killing the puppies to let them live. If you take them to a shelter, nobody is going to adopt them, if you leave them in the streets, they will die. She has to have been impregnated within 2 weeks to abort or terminate the pregnancy. If she mated with a min-pin, she would not be in trouble. Even so, too many animals don't have homes and live in the streets. Terminate (or abort whatever you want to call it) the pregnancy. Accidents and complications DO happen. Many animals in NATURE die from childbirth. Cancel the pregnancy then get her spayed.

Well, I don't know that they will abort the puppies without spaying her. Abortion- just like in human females- can be really damaging to the dogs ovaries and could result in damage to her future litters.
Even if you aborted them now you wouldn't be able to breed her for a while as the operation would be severe and she would need time to re-coop.
I'm sure there will be people that will coo at the thought of yorkie-huahuas.
I would recommend that you go through with the birth- you'll be glad you did.

I would recommend letting her finish out the pregnancy and raise the mixed pups if you dont want to spay her.

Most veterinarians (any with a brain) will not give an "abortion" shot. There are SOO many risks with the shot, including Pyometra (infection of the uterus which can lead to death) and Death, as well as so many other issues. If you care about your dog please dont do this to her.

Raise the puppies, and keep a better eye on her next time.

No you have to do this within 48 hours after them mating. The vet would normally give her a shot so the pups don't attach. Anytime after that there is nothing you can do except spay or prepare for mix breed pups.

Actually small mix breeds are popular now. Sell them for $200.00 - $300.00 each. Then next time she is in season only let her out supervised.

If your female dog manages to escape your property while she is in heat and then comes home impregnated, the veterinarian can interrupt the unwanted gestation by giving the dog some injections; the first one of these should be done on the first day the dog copulated or before two days is over. After this procedure the female will still be in heat, therefore you should still keep the dog in the house until she comes out of heat.

Few if any vets will do that. Many will spay a pregnant dog if she is early enough in gestation, but they won't do it just because. You'll have to opt to either adopt out mixed breed pups, or have her spayed.

If you're going to breed, make sure she measures to the breed standard, by having her evaluated by a judge. And make sure she's over two years and tests free of all genetic issues. Yorkies and many other small dogs are very prone to luxating patellas (slipping kneecaps). It's getting out of hand in the breeds and responsible breeders are trying to eliminate it.

well, i know someone my hubby worked with had his dog's pups aborted. but that was cause his dog was a wolf mix and it was a pit that mated with her and he wasn't about to put that mix out in the public.

but, i know of someone on a message board who had a yorkie mate with a chihuahua (which the mix is called a chorkie) and she was offered over $1000 each for the pups. way stupid if you ask me for lack of a better word. people paying that much for mutts. despite a cute name, they are still mutts you know. but that is another option for you to think about.

No, you would need to get her spayed. Call your vet and ask if it too late to have her spayed. Frankly, just because a dog has papers does not mean they should be bred.
