Absolutely right. But I think the best reason to not buy from pet stores is so you aren't feeding the system and encouraging puppy mills to keep overbreeding and trying to profit from those doggies' misery.

People say get a dog from a shelter, not because they're better or anything but because that way you are not supporting a puppy-mill or BYB.

They may all come from the same place in the long run but getting a dog from a shelter isn't putting more money into the hands of someone who uses animals as a means of profit.

If nobody ever bought a puppy from a pet store there would be no market for them and the pet stores would stop selling them. Also getting a pet from a shelter in most cases the animal is already spayed/neutered and has recieved it's shots. Most are evaluated for temperment and such and most shelters will not adopt out a dog to someone who is incapable of caring for it.

Petstores, BYB's and puppy mills can't claim any of that about their "product". You are right in that all dogs deserve a loving home no matter where they come from but buying a pet from any of the above just promotes a vicious cycle of animal abuse and neglect.

Most dogs from pet stores end up at shelters after around 1.5-2 years ( or when they stop being cute).
I don't say that all dogs from shelters are healthy and everything because who knows what they have been through but the shelter has given some kind of medical care since getting the dog.

Most shelter dogs were bred by puppymills, backyard breeders, or left to procreate unintentionally. The dog is NOT the problem. They are not bad animals. But if you go to a petstore and pay big money for a poorly bred dog, you are giving the commercial breeders (puppymills) just the thing that keeps them in business....profits. The same for backyard breeders who just want to breed Muffy and Biff to get their 'money back'. Remove the profit incentive, and you remove the motivation to continue. Once a dog from these irresponsible sources gets to shelter or rescue, you can give them a good home without enriching the jerks that tried to exploit them.

As far as "Who cares if they have problems?" Ever think maybe the dog suffering from the problem does? Would you want to have knees that slip out of joint while you walk? Or hips that ache 24/7? Would you want to have a heart that gives out when you are only a teenager? How about the horror of a liver disease? Would you want to suffer like that, and know NO one cared enough about you to do the tests that would have PREVENTED that? Talk about stupid things...Humph.

I tell people to go to petfinder.org

I got two dogs from pet stores. The first, the vest was impress with the care of the dog. If was in perfect share, and was a full breed.
The second was from a different store, She was in okay shape. She had been treated to common illness in a pet store, and her baby teeth were all broken from chewing on the bars
I got two well adjusted dogs, that like dogs and people.
They both were full breeds
They both were on sale, one was 5 months and one was 4 months.
I brought from pet stores because I have a daughter with special needs, and I need to see her with the dog. The dog need to be claim, and she need not to be afraid of them.
A pet store gave me the time to come back more than once and find a dog.
I think when you are buying from a pet store, especially if paying full price, you need go in it eyes wide open.
I do not think people buying from a pet store are dumb. I think they need to know that they may not get what they paid for. You can get sick dogs. Some dogs leave their parents to young, and could come from a puppy mill.

The other side of the coin in, that these dogs also need loving homes.

I don't think the pet store hating is b/c of the puppies. Of course we would love to rescue all of them, but can't.

You are right in that you don't know where a shelter dog came from. But the anti-pet store stance is in an effort to decrease demand for pet-store puppies (and therefore the need for puppy mills). You are 100% correct in that a pet store puppy may wind up in a shelter. But I would rather give my $$$ to the shelter than to the pet store.

Just MHO

If you buy directly from a Pet Store or an irresponsible breeder you are encouraging them to continue breeding irresponsibly...it gives them excuses to continue to overbreed their females..to use them as puppy producing machines..Shelter/rescue dogs do come with baggage, but it is understood that they wil lbe coming with baggage of some sort, however when you pay a high price for a dog from a pet store or breeder you don't expect it to come with issues of any kind...there is no comparing buying from a breeder/pet store or adopting from a shelter/rescue..it is like comparing apples to oranges.

The reason not to buy from a pet store is to not financially support the business of puppy mills.

ur right. all dogs, sick, old, young, and disabled should have a good home. they need love, and attention. that's what every dog was made for. either either for working, or for a house pet. but, that doesn't mean anything. they all need love.
