Yesterday, my basset hound had surgery to have an early-stage malignant tumor removed from his back leg.

He has stitches, and his leg is dressed in gauze. I was told by the vet tech that I should remove the gauze today.

I attempted to do so, with him in both a sitting and laying down position, stabilizing his leg so that I wasn't moving it around unnecessarily. But he bawls every time I touch it, and now, he won't let me near it.

The vet tech said that I should be able to do this myself. My boyfriend will be home soon, and we're going to give it one more try, with him holding and comforting the dog.

I'm curious if there is anything I can do to make this easier or less painful for him. If the two of us can't manage it together, I plan to ask the vet to do it, but would prefer to not have to, as I worry another car/vet trip would cause him much stress right now.

If I can't manage it, I'll certainly call and at least ask for advice, but does anyone have suggestions?

I'm certainly no expert and there are many breeds I have never heard of. GitEmGang keeps ranting about how there are no English Bulldogs and there are no teacup anything. Many many others state that certain breeds and colors are recognized by AKC or whomever the God of the dog world is. Now someone is asking about a "miniature" English Bulldog?

I'm not mocking anyone or their beloved pets...but is it getting a little out of hand?

I have mutts, plain and simple. Yes, one is Black Lab/Pointer, but she is not a "Pointing Lab" she was free and came from an accidental litter from some moron who didn't spay/neuter. My other mutt is Jack Russell/Beagle (we think), but he's not a "Jack-a-Bee". He was dumped in a shelter because of his temperament as a puppy and I adopted him. I paid $175, but that money went on to help the next dog, so I was glad to pay it.

Just wondering what all the stink is about and whos' coming up with these "breeds"...

What's the best method for getting old stains from doggie accidents out of the carpet (vomit, urine, and poop)? I cleaned the area thoroughly and it would look clean for a while and then the spot comes back. I've already shampoo'd the carpet and had it steam cleaned.

Is it possible to teach a dog to distinguish left from right, without using a reference point? If so, how does one go about doing this?

MP3 files tend to strip out a lot of things we humans can't hear, so I am curious that by stripping out information from the sound by converting it to MP3, the part which we humans can't hear, would be also be eliminated so the dog wouldn't be able to hear it either. Let's assume we are using equipment capable of recording the frequency of a dog whistle, and able to save it in AIFF (Raw Audio Format), and then converting it to MP3...

I have an 8-9 month old shep/lab/husky cross. As of the last week or so, he has become very subdued. (Which is very a-typical of his previous behaviour).

He still plays with me, but doesn't really want to run around outside by himself or anything, and he has stopped gulping down his food. He eats it, but he just comes and goes and has bits and bites here and there. I work all day, and my boyrfriend says the pup just basically sleeps waiting for me to get home. Then he sleeps all night with me... he seems happy...but I can't help but worry about my baby.

Is this normal??? Is he just getting older?? 9 mos still seems young to me.

Also, since the onset of this it has gone down to like -30 C here, could it be a winter thing?? (Keeping in mind he IS part Husky).

I just got a dog for my hubby. He is half Rottweiler/ Bull Mastiff. He is a very sweet boy BUT...he scares the hell out of me sometimes! For example.. My daughter (3) was eating cereal, she has a bad habit of feeding him while she is eating. He is not food aggressive but I got pretty PO'd because he totally stuck his face in her bowl and went to town. When I tried to pull him off he growled...I got scared. That was the only time he's growled at me. To be honest when I tell him to do something and he won't, I don't push it. Help please. I really want this to work out.

Our local shelter has recently put in their annual request for "blankie" donations. Blankets keep the dogs from having to sleep on cold hard concrete. This is especially helpful for the dogs with old bones.

Just wanted to mention to everyone...if you have any old blankets or towels, please donate to your local shelter this winter!!

(Not a question, I know)

Happy Holidays!
