Is it possible to teach a dog to distinguish left from right, without using a reference point? If so, how does one go about doing this?

I'm guessing you can. I saw on tv a dog adding so i guess if you can teach a dog to add you can teach them to distinguish left and right without using a reference point

You will have to teach the command just as you would the sit command. You will have to use a referance point in the beginning until the dog learns left and right. Then the dog will respond to the command only

A dog can be train UDT Utility dog training) which is primarily hand signals. If you are asking whether you can teach a dog on command turn right, turn left; it's possible. But I'm not sure why you would want to do something like that.

100% I am teaching my Akita now to do just that.
Just conitnue to say left/right and eventually he will get it.
Use treats if you wish but I am finding that treats are not required for these commands. I would say though that I have only used
left command at moment.

I know this can be done otherwise I would not attempt it. Unsure why a dog would need to know left or right but it feels good teaching him. Good luck!

Easiest way: Tap on right paw and when they lift it tell them good right, do the same with the left. With praise they will learn their right paw from left. If you want the dog to turn left or right: while on leash take a treat in fron of their face have them follow it to the treat in each direction accordingly, and when the follow through tell them good left turn. If want you dog to look left or right: Have the dog sit put a treat in front of his face tell him to leave it and take the treat to the left of his face tell him good look left, etc.. Good luck.

Yes, it is possible. How, I'm not sure, maybe someone else can answer that. The reason I know this is because watching sled dog mushers, they use commands "gee" (right) and "haw" (left) to their dogs when they want them to make a turn. So yes, it is possible!
