I have a concern regarding my 9 yr old dalmation. When we go out for walks, she likes ot eat grass, which seems normal enough. But today she was digging in the wet grass , through mud too adn then ate what she dug up. She is well fed adn I wonder if there is something wrong with her?

Ok so I have been asking about dog foods a lot recently, about which is the most preferred by other dog owners. I really want my 2 year old German Shepard/Lab mix to have the best food. He is missing a back leg, so he is at greater risk of ACL injuries and his breed is more susceptible to arthritis, and having only one back leg will exacerbate this in his later years. Anyway, I have been watching who gets a thumbs up or down when they recommend a food, and Eukanuba and Science Diet always get a thumbs down, along with store brands like Purina and Pedigree (too many fillers) I am asking because I want to keep his weight down throughout his life as recommended by the vet, to make hopping on that leg easier for him as he gets older. Innova, Canidae, Authority Oven Baked, and Natures Recipe Lamb and Rice mostly get thumbs up. So I am trying to weed through and make a better determination of the best food for him. I know it seems like I am making a big deal out of this sorry but I love him!

When you stop playing with her with the flashlight, she shakes and keeps staring at the ceiling and walls. It has been 2 days and she is still searching for it. We have tried playing with other things with her but she is uninterested. All she does now is stare and whine. We are worried about her having a nervous breakdown.

What would be a good name for a Boxer-Pittbull mix puppy. I just lost my two animals Bailey(Dog) and Cinder(Cat). Both two a car. I am supposed to get a female Pittbull-Boxer mix for Christmas and I was just wondering of good names. Not Bailey because that was my last dogs name. O and I do give my dogs a last name that is the same as mine. So the name will have to go with the last name Wheatley. And If any one would like t suggest any middle names that would go well with the names you post I might pick it. TYVM (thank you very much)

We have a 4 year old weiner dog. He is somewhat potty trained i guess. He will not bark at the door when he wants to go out. If we dont see him we are out of luck. We had him checked for an infection. We found he had crystals in his urine. He is now on a diet that is supposed to help. He went out at least a dozen times yesterday and a few minutes before his last event on the carpet.
Any help or suggestions would be great. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

we are close to buying the PetSafe Electric Fence (wireless-no cables) for $258 from Petsmart. Anyone have pro/cons on using this?

Our puppy is 16 weeks old and weights 20 lbs now and we expect her to get up to around 40 lbs full grown. Our back yard is full of trees (0.5 acre) so a real fence is out of the question. We plan to use the lowest setting or beep only mode.

Thanks

Yesterday, my mom and my dad bought me a beautiful Cairn Terrier for my birthday. I named him Mr. Furley (from Three's Company.) Anywho, I have some questions about training him...

- They say that Cairns should not have full roam of the house. How do we keep him in one room? He's a wild little fella so he's bouncing of the walls.
- He is a biter... well, he rough plays with everyone. We tried picking him up and saying no but it doesn't work. We even tried replacing our hands with chew toys but he rather bite our hands... what do we do?
- How do we stop him from barking?
- How long does it take for a dog to be fully trained? Do you think it is possible to have it done by Christmas?

I'll probably be back with more questions throughout the week so brass yourselves!!! LOL! :)

I found a stray dog that is either in heat, or very pregnant. I have felt her tummy and it feels like there may be a puppy in there. However, she is spotting, which makes me think she might be in heat. She is a Lhaso Apso and I have Shih Tzus. I am trying to find her owner, before I hand her over to rescue. But in the mean time, I don't want her to get pregnant if she is in heat. My biggest concern is that she is pregnant and because she is in a strange environment, she isn't comfortable enough to have the puppies.

I also should add the I have a litter of 4 week old Shih Tzu puppies here too, which seems to make her very nervous. She shys away from them when they are out of their crate. She also won't let my dogs near her without growling.

Can someone help? I am at a loss here!

WHEN TO USE NEGATIVE PUNISHMENT IN CLASS

My dog is dying of lymphoma, and we would like to put him down ourselves at home; I cannot find a vet who will come out to the country to do this. I have several Ambien tablets (sleeping pills). If I crush them in some water and give that to him would he be able to just go to sleep and his system would shut down? I do not want him to suffer (i.e., have a seizure, vomit, etc.), but I just want him to go gently. He is at the end and needs us to help him, but we just cannot stand the thought of his going to the vets office, as he has always hated going to the vet. Please, please help if you can, and as quickly as possible. I would like to do this today, if possible. I also have several pain medications; Tylenol #3, Tylox, Darvocet, etc. from different surgeries that I never took. If anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated.

that I did take my dog Lassie to the vet yesterday (reluctantly) and the vet said she was in extremely good health for her age (17yrs). She gave her antibiotics just in case it was an infection and not her age (weeing everywhere) but she didn't think so. Her heart was strong and lungs were fine, so there is still life in the old dog yet!! I was so relieved to come back home with her as were all the family. So thank you all for your kind words and support recently. We will be buying another doggy stocking this Xmas! xx

One or two people recently have asked whether they should get their pre-school children a dog for Christmas. I have received a violation for answering one which 'insulted her intelligence'. I answered on the same level as the question. Anybody else agree a Dog is for Life and Not Just for Christmas?
