the most common reasons dogs scoot is because they have anal glands that are full. Dogs have an anal gland on each side of the outer anus that were used for marking territory in the wild. They are useless now, but usually get expressed on their own when they defacate. Call your vet tomorrow and take her in to have them expressed.

Dogs have scent glands at the base of their tail, The purpose of the glands is to give their waste a distinctive smell. Any other dog that comes by instantly knows who made the heap.
Unfortunately, sometimes the openings of the glands become clogged causing itching. Riding his rear on the carpet is his way of relieving the itch ( just like scratching ).
You can pop the glands yourself, if you know how but I'd advise letting the vet do it. It is painful to the poochie.

Your dog is probably scooting on the carpet to try and express his anal glands, you just need to take him into his vet and have them express them for him. Good Luck.

Plugged anal glands usually. You can spend a fortune and pay a VET or do it yourself. Like your 2 fingers squeezing a pimple but his bumhole instead. Be careful it doesn't go in your face. Wear latex gloves and have tissue handy. Lots of smelly stuff will come out. I am serious BTW. Our boxer dog got that at least once a year.

Take him to the vet and have him checked for worms and have his anal glands emptied by the vet. These are 2 separate things. Worms are checked via a stool sample. Anal glands expressed are done by the vet

If there are no worms than he is scooting on the carpet because...

he may be scatching his butt
or
He might feel that his butt is dirty. Since he can't tuch it, he rubs it against the floor to get it off. (you might wan to help him get it of whatever it is)
