He's just excited to be going for a ride, unfortunately, it can be dangerous for you driving if he's jumping all over the car!

They sell "Doggie Seatbelts" at Petsmart that you use to fasten them to the seatbelt. It sounds like it would be safer for both of you if you used one on him.

There is no reason a dog shouldn't have good car manners. It is probably that you just haven't taught the dog what down-stay means in the car. Even a dog that knows these commands in the house or obedience ring will have trouble performing in the car until they practice there.

Regardless of their manners dogs should not be loose in a car - in an accident they then become a missile in the car. I know someone who was SERIOUSLY injured (it was touch & go if he would make it) and his dog killed when an accedent catapulted the dog into him. Either put him in a carrier crate or use a doggie seatbelt.

I'd recommend getting him a doggie car seat or seat belt. This prevents them from being so wiggly where it will distract your driving. Some dogs just don't like car rides and even get car sick. One of my dogs whines during car rides too. I don't know either if he is just excited to go somewhere or just doesn't like car rides. He did get better though after I bought the dog seat belts. If you are going for a long car ride, maybe give him a toy or rawhide . . . something to take his mind off of it.

He needs an open window. Dogs can get motion sickness. They like to ride with their heads out the window. You may want to get a body harness that attaches to your seat belt in case you have to stop suddenly. This may help him settle down and will protect him and you. Never attach anything to his collar or you will strangle him or break his neck. Try doing some practice rides to the local park. My dog loves riding in the car but he needs an open window from time to time.

You can purchase doggie seat belts that will keep him from moving around. Now you just have to keep him quiet. Most dogs love to go for rides, however I have one who gets so anxious from riding in the car that he gets sick.
