When you stop playing with her with the flashlight, she shakes and keeps staring at the ceiling and walls. It has been 2 days and she is still searching for it. We have tried playing with other things with her but she is uninterested. All she does now is stare and whine. We are worried about her having a nervous breakdown.

That's probably an OCD. Too bad - but this is the reason mamy pet experts caution against using laser lights and flashlights as toys, as the dog cannot ever catch the "prey" and then obsesses over it as yours is doing. Well - manage things so that your dog doesn't ever see a flashlight, and do some calming things with your dog to help to get her head screwed back on. Massage her ears (very calming) and her whole body. A body wrap made from an ace bandage may help, as will changing her environment (you took her out of that room, right?) Good for you to try to get her to interact with other toys - keep trying.
Oh - and other things that might set off her whining and shaking again - reflections (like from window hangings/suncatchers/prisms, reflections from CD's and other shiny things - mirrors, people's watches, etc) I'm not saying this is a Defcon 5 - type situation, but just be aware of these things! Good luck!

My large dog in the back loves the flashlight too! When you bring out back, she gets so excited to see it. She will start chasing the light, and when you turn it off, she looks at the flashlight like "Where did the light go?"

Hi Mat and Family: This is to funny because four years ago my buddy "Snuggles" did the same stupid thing - just staring and waiting for it to come back. We took him to the doctors after a two week stint of barking at nothing and was told to put him outside at night for two-three hours and let him gaze into limbo and after a few days guess what! IT WORKED! now that cost me $128.00 dog exam and cost you nothing Your friend Gallagher in Cleveland, Ohio

I was at my Uncles house and he has a dog Boxer named Remo and I was messing with him playing with a flashlight and I would flash it up at the ceiling and he would jump 4 feet in the Air then I would make him chase it and I made him foam at the mouth accidentally. He sat their for a while trying to find it but eventually he gave up and went to his regular routine. You could try and bring or carry or drag your dog into a different room. I would suggest that you try bringing him or carrying him into another room before you try to drag him.

One of the stranger obsessive behaviors is chasing light. This one may sometimes be due to a neurological problem. Possibly there is a component of brain malfunction in many obsessive behavior cases.
