The dog can probably sense that you are afraid of it. Many times the dog is just trying to tell you to stay away from his territory when he is seeming aggressive. He might just be trying to scare you away.

Personally, I would check with its owner and see if you can feed it dog treats. I have found that usually, if you feed a dog, it is less likely to want to kill you. I have worked in the pest control industry for almost 10 years, and have feed many seemingly aggressive dogs treats, to the point that they would wait for me to come visit them. I can't promise this would work, but it can't hurt!

This is very common. Dogs a very territorial and will defend their territory. But..........If you will sit down next to the fence and eat your lunch or something like read a book, work the crossword puzzle or just anything where you can spend 15-20 minutes just sitting there with your back to the fence. You don't want to sit close enough so that he could harm you. Talk to the dog in normal tone (don't matter what you say as long as the tone is normal). Maybe give him a bite of what ever you are eating. But........This can be something the owner will get very upset about cause he may have trained the dog not to accept food that is offered by a 'stranger' as poison proofing.

Your best bet is to talk to the owner and see if you can be introduced to the dog. If you and the owner are in conflict and this procedure is impossible, my first suggestion will work. Do not make eye contact with the dog, they see this as a threat and a direct challenge. Just make yourself comfortable and ignore the barking and snarling. Enjoy a cup of coffee and read the newspaper, magazine or just what ever you can but make it clear that the barking and snarling does not frighten you.

It's entertaining for a territorial dog like this one to surprise you and get a reaction from you. You may want to OK this with your neighbor first, but try carrying some chicken or roast beef slices with you. When you hear him charging at you, throw the treats at him - and keep right on going. Hopefully he'll stop and eat. Repeat, and keep repeating. Soon, your showing up on the other side of his fence will mean : "Oh goody, here comes that treat-dispensing person again." and you won't get charged. The key here is to not be exciting yourself (i.e.: no running, shouting, barking back @ the dog). You and this dog don't have to be friends, but I'm sure you'd prefer to not have to worry as you walk by there.
Just curious - what does your neighbor do about this? Does he want a "guard dog"?

Talk to your neighbor It may help for you to meet the dog at a park so it can see you on neutral territory with lots of pats & goodies. Also you could befriend the dog by tossing dog biskets over the fence (one company in my area issues their delivery drivers boxes of dog biskets- they have less dog problem than most).

It sounds like the dog feels threatend by you.
Have you ever hurt the dog in anyway? If so, they dog more than likley remembers it.
But if you have not harmed him in anyway he may still just be threatend by you.
I think that you should talk to your neighbor about it. The dog may have been abused in the past and he is scared by men.
