Does anyone know whether or not it is adviseable to get a female or a male puppy. Does one sex get along better with another?

It really depends on the temperament of the dog you and the one you are planning to get. I possible, before you agree to getting the new puppy, have it brought over to your house and see how the dogs react to each other. It is very important that you do this at your home, because that is where your dog is more comfortable. She may act out of character if she is in unfamiliar territory.

Honestly, unless there have been other dogs living within the household before, I wouldn't get a new puppy. Your Rat Terrier could become jealous very easily but if you are dead set on a Dutch Shepherd (good choice of dog though! Dutch Shepherds are amazing!) I'd go for it but make sure to introduce them on neutral territory and give your Rat Terrier plenty of attention.

My dog's 2 bestest friends are Rat terriers, a male and a female - both rescues from the same breeder, and both happy to pal around together. They love to play together and seem to be 100% compatible. I also know 2 male RT's who live together and seem to do just fine.

Sex doesn't matter if they are spayed/neutered. Two dogs in a home is actually better because they won't suffer from separation anxiety as much as one dog would.

its depends if your sdog is an alpha dog if she is then it is better to get a male because they are more sumissive. before you buy the dog you should arrangne a meeting for the two dogs to see if the get along

Best of luck

As long as they both are neutered/spayed, you can keep males together, females together, or one of each.
It's usually when they are unaltered, that they will fight for dominance and the alpha status.
