I recently adopted a small lab mix from a local rescue organization. He seems well adjusted and is impeccably housetrained. He does however have a touch of separation anxiety, which is causing an unexpected problem. My current schedule is that I wake up at 5:30, have a cup of coffee and take the dog for 45 minute walk. We then watch the morning news until about 7:15 when I get ready for work. I typically leave about 7:45-8:00. He will whine and bark a little, at the door when I leave but settles down quickly and has been getting better about it steadily (he didn't even bark this morning). Before I got him I typically would go home for lunch, which I thought he would find comforting, but this has had the opposite effect. After I go back to work he becomes much more agitated and engages in destructive chewing, on things he knows are off limits. I tried not going home for lunch yesterday, and when I got back, no problems. The problem is I would like to be able to eat lunch at home. Help.

My cat is a one yr old male and we jokingly call him crazy. Particularly late at night, he will go into hyper crazy mode. His ears go back, his back hunches and then he's off running sideways and pulling a matrix move by jumping off the walls. Then he will proceed to scratch at the carpet if we close the bedroom door. After that he continues to cry for awhile with a strange cry that almost sounds like he's saying "moooooooom." I love this cat with all my heart and I spend so much time with him, perhaps too much time. I just don’t understand why he does this. Anyone have any ideas?

P.S. He is fixed!

He's a great dog, but freaks out when we leave him alone...like to go to work or whatever. I thought maybe getting another dog would help...to keep him company and be a playmate. What do you think? Thanks.

I have been a Marlboro smoker for 17 years, but today I change brands. Why? My ignorance. American Spirit brand is the only major tobacco company that does not torture animals. I don't think it is a secret- smoking kills. We know this. I still choose to smoke, but why torture animals who have no choice? If you care about animals please change your brand today- show big tobacco that we do not approve of this completely unnecessary testing. Are you with me?

I recently got three laying hens. I have them housed in an old playhouse which has insulation in the ceiling and is fully enclosed. There is a door that is closed (there is a small gap around the door) and a towel (folded double thick) hangs over the opening in the door, which at night has a screen "door" that clips on to keep the chickens in (and varmints out). During the day they are free range in my yard. They have nest boxes and straw in their house, food and a no-freeze water dish. During the day I use a heat lamp if it's cold (to keep them laying and to keep them comfy), however I've been told if I leave it on at night they wont' be able to sleep. Some people have told me they will be fine as long as they're dry, others have said they will freeze without heat. HELP! I don't want to freeze my chickens! Will they be okay? It only gets down to the low 20's, right now it's upper 20's overnight and 40-50 in the daytime. Are they okay without heat at night?

Well, it grows a tiny bit of brown algae on one of the tubes and a tiny bit on the glass, but that is it. I hear of all of these problems of it taking over. I have 1 oscar and I never change the water, just add more when the water evaporates. The tank is not clean, lots of leftover food on the bottom. Aren't these the main causes of it? Why then does my tank not grow algae? I even leave the light on from noon to midnight. Is it an enigma or does anyone know why this might be?

Sorry everyone, I'm new to this site and I failed to share some important info on my 1st question, so let me try this again! I live in the U.S. in Richmond, IN. I have two collies that I unfortunately cannot keep. I would like them to have a good home together if possible. One is male and the other female-they are both tri-color and beautiful. They are both house broke and have great personalities and temperments. They have had one litter together and neither are fixed. It really hurts to have to get rid of them, but I can't keep them for my own selfish reasons. They need and deserve an owner(s) who can spend quality time with them. If anyone is interested, e-mail me at ambmclar@indiana.edu or froggieprins_s25@yahoo.com and I can e-mail you some pics, i cant figure out how to get my picture on here, let alone theirs!

I have a 6 week old Rottweiler Akita Cross, I just want to know at what point to start training and where to start. What is the best resource? Is it all in a book or can I access it online. He seems very playful and goes for my shoes whenever i'm out in the yard. I have tried to distract him but it doesn't always work. I a trying to get him to come when I say 'Come here boy' but its intermittant. Another major surprise to me was that he doesn't eat any of the treats that I buy for him, hence I have nothing to bargain with. He's even started nipping at his age! Boy those teeth! Please advise me. Also are there any free info packs that I can get from anywhere. Advise much appreciated... Thanx

I recently bought some little guppies to feed to my turtle. The problem is that the fish are dying, about one a day. Right now I have about 15 in a 5ish gallon bowl, although now I realize I should have bought 10 instead of twenty. I also feed them goldfish flakes every day. Anyway, should I get a filter, a bigger aquarium, or anything special? My turtle will eat the dead ones, but they die faster than I can feed them to him (I give him about two fish every other day, they're pretty small). Also, the point was to get him to hunt down his own food, giving him dead ones doesnt have the same effect. And just FYI, I only feed him a dead fish if it died that day, I wouldn't let it sit too long.

I am helping trap a colony of ferrel cats that are coming up HIV positive. Some are negative and some are positive. The older ones seem to be positive.I worry about them infecting the neighborhood cats. We have been told they will be fine and get them fixed and release them. I personally think they should be euthanized but the doctors at 3 different hospitals have stated let them back out after fixing and vaccinating them. Help....What are your opinions?
