My cat is a one yr old male and we jokingly call him crazy. Particularly late at night, he will go into hyper crazy mode. His ears go back, his back hunches and then he's off running sideways and pulling a matrix move by jumping off the walls. Then he will proceed to scratch at the carpet if we close the bedroom door. After that he continues to cry for awhile with a strange cry that almost sounds like he's saying "moooooooom." I love this cat with all my heart and I spend so much time with him, perhaps too much time. I just don’t understand why he does this. Anyone have any ideas?
P.S. He is fixed!

These are all very helpful, thanks so much!
We do have another cat, but he just likes to bully her, so that doesn't work out so well.
Also, about the spray bottles, I have tried using that before. Unfortunately my cat doesn't mind water and finds it quite amusing when you spray him lol. So, he continues to do the bad behavior.

Have you changed his food lately? Changing to a more nutritious food sometimes causes a cat to gain more energy.
Cats are going to be hyper at night anyway, its their time and that is when the prowl.
As for the door thing, my cat does that too. Because you are so close to your cat he doesn't like to be shut off from being around you. Maybe there is a spot in your room he likes to sleep and you aren't aware of it. Leave the door cracked for him, or get him a kitty door so he has run of the house. My cat hates it when he is kept out of a particular area too!

Ok, from what I can tell my two cats (5 and 3 both one a just moved in and the other a rescue) are the strange ones. I hardly have night problems because I let them out in the yard when it gets dark and let them back in before I go to bed. They understand "bed time" and they know that if they aren't going to sleep when I'm sleeping then they can always spend time in the basement. This didn't take much training. Just telling them the consequences of their actions and being firm enough to follow through.
Sometimes they act as if they think they have the right to wake me in the morning for their wet food but they know that if they wake me before dawn they're not getting any. And I just reinforce my decisions every time we have an issue. Like last night the choice was either outside or the basement. And since I had a long day, one went outside and the other in the basement.
Here's my key: spray bottles. At times all I have to do is shake a bottle and they find something else to do that doesn't involve me. The jumping the walls isn't acceptable, so they would get the bottle.
I think you should watch him and see which places he likes most so that he knows where to go when you need your time. I treat them with the same amount of respect I expect, like I don't bother them when they eat so they don't get to bother me when I eat. And think like they do when it comes to having my space.

My 9 year old tuxedo kitty with the name Mickey Mouse does alot of the same that you describe. We laugh and say Mickeys imaginary friends are over and he is having a good time. He is a total HOUSE cat never allowed outdoors any ways he doesn't like it much in reality hes a chicken, too! My belief is he's just wearing off some energy and getting exercise. I've had a number of cats do this over the years, all have their own personalities. Sounds like you have a goof-ball, just enjoy his/her antics.

He is a normal one year old male cat. I would get him a friend, NOW! We waited to give ours a friend when he was 3 and he is still rough with her. Get another MALE, they'll be on more equal terms.
Also, try playing with him a lot an hour or so before you go to bed. Try feeding him before you go to bed.
Once they are used to sleeping with you, they will tear at your door all night if you try changing things and keep him out.
Our 1 yr old female does not get up in the middle of the night and is more calm; females generally are.

hi, if you work all day out and come to home in the evening and your cat can not go out and spend the energy he gained from eating all day it is absulately normal. My cat also showed same behaviours. I solved the problem by playing with her (with a ball, a pointer, a rope and etc.) about an hour everyday just after returning from work. Just tire him. Or get another animal so that he can play with him/her all day..mine never accepted another animal so good luck...

Yup, he sounds like a normal cat to me.
Mine do that all the time, usually around 3 am. My one will decide that it's just too quiet in the house and then jump up on my nightstand in the bedroom and proceed to knock things off. She knows I'm going to wake up and yell at her so the minute she hears me stir, she jumps down then runs up and down the steps.
My male cat does that too, I hear him in the basement running around, then he finds his mouse and plays with that, all early a.m.
Cats seem to kind of be nocturnal.....bad for us. But it usually only lasts about a 1/2 hour at my house.
Seems perfectly normal to me, lol.

Thats really funny, I have always had hyper cats growing up and I just recently got a new kitten who is the calmest cat I have ever seen (which is nice since I have a bunny). My point: cats have personalities and love to mimic too. Do you have any kids?

Cats get like that at night. It's perfectly normal cat behavior. The weirdest thing is that when you catch them (while they are in that mode), you'll notice that they are not angry at all. On the contrary, they are ultra happy and purr like crazy.

Do not worry about him, this behavior is normal. He is probably just lonely you know. When cats are bored, they usual jump around the house and walls at night time (cats are nocturnal if you did not know).
You're cat is fine :], just really bored.

LOL...I don't think there's anything you can do. my boyfriends cat is like that, he 4 now and is calmer now. even my 18 year old will take a little run after she go poop.
I have no idea why they do this but it so funny! if it starts to annoy you, play with him earlier and try to get that energy out of him
