I recently bought some little guppies to feed to my turtle. The problem is that the fish are dying, about one a day. Right now I have about 15 in a 5ish gallon bowl, although now I realize I should have bought 10 instead of twenty. I also feed them goldfish flakes every day. Anyway, should I get a filter, a bigger aquarium, or anything special? My turtle will eat the dead ones, but they die faster than I can feed them to him (I give him about two fish every other day, they're pretty small). Also, the point was to get him to hunt down his own food, giving him dead ones doesnt have the same effect. And just FYI, I only feed him a dead fish if it died that day, I wouldn't let it sit too long.

If you plan on raising your own feeder fish, try guppies- at least they will breed for you.

Go ahead and feed your turtle a handful of assorted size fish. You'll notice that it hunts down and eats those of a specific size- if the fish is to big or small, it ignores it. baby turtles eat SMALL fish! Remember- they have to fit ni the mouth!

From that point forth, toss in fish that are on the bottom edge of the size scale and just leave them until it eats them or they die. if they die, go ahead and remove them.

Also- try mixing things up with worms, shrimp, etc Babies usually love bloodworms!

I have 2 RES and I have been feeding them fish since they have been in my care. What I did was start by buying 3-5 fish at a time and I placed them in the tank with the turtle (since everything they need to live is already set up in the turtle tank). when my turtles here small the fish would stay in the turtle tank for about a week. The turtles got lots of excersise. The fish nibbled off the turtle food (I feed them once I noticed they were too tired to swim after the fish - did not want them to starve). Now the turtles are larger the fish only last a day.....but they are very good hunters now.

Too many fish in a small bowl. The first thing that is happening, is they are running out of air. Get a pump and airstone..and change the water every 2-3 days min...unless you want to bump it up to a 10 gal and get a filtration unit. But they need air...then filtration..

Um...Babys aren't exactly supposed to have fish until they are like older and bigger. And its probably scared to death because he has never seen one before.
