Is it considered improper to have different colored carpets in different rooms of a house? What if the areas are separated by wood flooring? What about different floors? What about for stairways connecting floors?

My mother is about to spend big bucks recarpeting her whole house because she thinks it all has to match. Any input is appreciated!

Please give your source, especially if you found a website stating the rules. I need something I can print up to show her as proof.

OK-I know that I have asked this question or something similiar to it many times before, BUT, I want to be thoroughly researched before we start.

We are in the planning stage of builidng a new home. We have 2 children, ages 4 and 7 who are very active. We have met once with our designer and have basically come up with the fact that we want a 2-story "Farmhouse" type home. We are going to be building on a 200+ acre farm, and wanted to stick with the theme. I want to build as much house as I possible can within my budget. Does anyone have any suggestions on things that I can put into the house? Any suggestions on upgrades? Any suggestions on where we can find materials, etc. at discounted prices without sacrificing quality. I want this home to be something that we can live in and enjoy for the rest of our lives, and I want everything to be of top quality. Any info that anyone can give is appreciated, especially from builders! And for other, what do u have that u can't live without?

The room is now decorated with dark wood, chinese red paintings of peonies and lilies (which I don't want to change) and a carmel-colored suede comforter. I'd like to chage the comforter to something more light-weight and springy looking, but I don't know what I can put with the dark wood and the red paintings to achieve something that stays true to the character of the room but doesn't look so fall/winter-y. What would you suggest?

My shower broke some time ago and I have been advised that my house needs re-wiring before it can be done. I don't have the money to do it. Is it possible I was told this so the contractor can make money out of me. I have not had a second opinon and am desperate for a shower as bath's take too long to run and I don't feel refreshed in the morning afterwards. They are okay if you want to relax though.

I have been spending a lot of time researching and inspecting. For those who have actual experience with both these type of floors, would you please give me your take on whcih one to go for.

My biggest concern keeping me away from going solid hardwood, is the scratching/denting, particularly the scratching part factor. It apperars that lamiate flooring is a lot harder and more durable to abuse.

It is my house, but I do not want to live like a guest in it. Taking the shoes off, watching not to pull the chair to fast, etc.

Thanks for your input.

My carpet is threadbare and needs replacing. The kids are almost grown and pets live outside. Should I get a timber floor or go with carpet again. Which is easier to keep clean? I know that carpet is dirty but it also hides a lot. If you have a timber floor and then get rugs, aren't you getting the vaccuum out anyway? What do you think?

We just moved into a new house and I'd like to fix up my dads bedroom. He's 55 and into westerns. So, I'm going for a rustic country look. Problem is...there's paneling in his room. It has already been painted an off white/creamy color. How do I use paint and make it look like old wood? Thanks in advance.

I recently had grasscloth wallpaper added to one wall of my office, and I simply LOVE the look.

When i purchased it, the clerk told me not to ever use grasscloth in a bathroom or kitchen because the moisture and oils would ruin the grass.

But when I look at decorating magazines, I see many bathrooms with real grasscloth wallpaper.

Is there a certain kind I should get to accomplish this?

I'm looking for a grasscloth that is similar to what just went up in my office. see here: http://www.livinginzen.net/office/my-love-affair-with-grasscloth-in-the-office-continues-on-custom-grasscloth-covered-files/

Thanks for any advice.

I am moving into apartments with ugly windows that make me feel like I am in prison or a basement. The windows are about 2 feet tall by 4 feet wide and about 4 feet off the ground. What kind of curtains should I get to hide that? Should they reach all the way to the floor or just below the window? Thank!

I have salem oak kitchen cabinets and we're trying to redo our kitchen floor with laminate flooring. Does my floor has to match my kitchen cabinets? Would it look weird if I went with something other than oak? I personally really like the very light maple floor. But I have a feeling it might not go together so well with my cabinets and my island. But also I don't really like the idea of plain oak either. Can't decide!! Please help!

I have an abundance (20 gallons) of white semi gloss latex paint and would like to use it to paint in my home, however I really don't want white, I was wondering if there was a product that I could purchase to add to the paint. Maybe a colorizer of some sort. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, I'm trying to decide on the color for my shutters on a 1930 tudor style home. The house is painted white with a peak in the front done in brick. I'm not interested in doing black. Any ideas on a nice combo to enhance the style of the house? Right now the shutters are a hunter green and I don't care for that. The arched front door is a dark stain which I like. Also....would you do the gargage door the same color as the shutters? Right now the garage is white like the house.
