I would like to start using our garage as a work out room/recording studio for my husband. He only plays guitar for fun but has so much equipment that I can hardly get into my closet!

if the garage is detached from the house a wall unit would be the cheapest and easiest to put in. If the garage is attached to the house, it's just a matter of cutting a couple of ac runs into the supply plenum and running them to the garage. Depending on how much work is involved, I couldn't see it being overly expensive. estimate, $200 - $500 dollars. $100 if you can do the work yourself.

as long as the thermostat isn't in the garage, it's not going to cost you a fortune in extra heating/cooling costs. The thermostat will operate the furnace from the room it is in, if it's in the Living room and it's set at 68, the garage may be colder or warmer than that but the living room will be 68.

If you get a wall unit it will only cost you the price of the unit and installation. Garage doors are not insulated very well and it will be expensive to have, we have it ran into our garage, all of it is finished off , insulated, but the doors are a big heat, or cold loss. Good luck!

You may need to pay a contractor to insulate the garage, or else any heating or air conditioning will mostly heat up the outside and cost you a great deal of money. Contact a general contractor and get a few quotes.
