Is it considered improper to have different colored carpets in different rooms of a house? What if the areas are separated by wood flooring? What about different floors? What about for stairways connecting floors?

My mother is about to spend big bucks recarpeting her whole house because she thinks it all has to match. Any input is appreciated!

Please give your source, especially if you found a website stating the rules. I need something I can print up to show her as proof.

Typically you put floor covering in rooms by the type of room and how much traffic its going to get.

Entryways, Kitchens and Bathrooms typically are hardwood, vinyl or ceramic tile.

Next living rooms/studies/great rooms usually are carpeted with Berber. Its more resilient and has a high aesthetic value.

Last is bedrooms. Typically a plush carpet is used.

There are huge variances on quality in all floor covering products, so shop around.

Normally ... every room can have a unique color and require different color carpet. A different person in each bedroom may prefer different colors. And in fact, today's buyers prefer hardwood flooring to carpeting in many rooms .... and ceramic tile in baths and kitchens.

Homebuilders primarily will carpet the entire house with a builder's grade of carpeting. This carpeting will be neutral color ..... it will be the same carpet in the entire house . This is primarily because this is the cheapest way to go. Neutral colors are offensive to the least amount of buyers. This practice is to sell as many homes as cheaply as one can.

You mother does not have to follow these rules for a house or carpet she wants to enjoy. I would only recommend it if you are going to sell the home.

Typically for resale and aesthetic you want some type of continuity in your flooring. You can transition from wood to carpet to tile but the only way I would use different colors of carpets is if you have two divided floors. We have one color upstairs and then another color in the basement, but the basement door remains closed so you don't see the transition of color on the stairs. If the door is open you would want to carpet the stairs to match the upper level and then make sure it compliments what you have downstairs.

Transitions from room to room when it comes to flooring, should be consistant unless you are changing materials(carpet to wood to ceramic), and even then the colours should be common so that every thing flows smoothly. Changing colour on the walls from room to room is the way to add change as long as the colours are consistant in tone. Pull it together by ensuring that all trim is the same style and colour. By using different carpet in every room, it will give the house a "chopped up" feel and make the rooms seem smaller as well. Consistency will provide a "flow" and make the spaces seem larger.
Your advice to your mother is correct, she should be consistant in selecting one colour of carpet to run through to adjoining rooms. If she would like to select a second colour it should be used on another floor(2nd level)

It isn't about rules. You can choose to decorate whatever suits you but as a trend, continuity of color has been a big one for quite a while. And it's a big one if you are considering resale. I wouldn't consider multiple colors in my house and always have had a neutral throughout.
