I want to stain my patio. I hope someone can advise on the cheapest possible stain and how to apply it for best results.

If the concrete is badly stained pressure wash it first, then use a standard concrete stain which can be found at any home improvement store. Then concrete sealer to make sure the color doesn't run, be sure to get the outdoor sealer.

If the concrete is very clean & new; there are concrete paints & stains in your home centers. If badly stained; ask them about & how to safely use a strong cleaner solution called TSP.

There's a thin top coat of new cement that can be colored but I'm unsure of where to get it.

Check a paint department. I think a long handled roller should do it easily.
