I am moving into apartments with ugly windows that make me feel like I am in prison or a basement. The windows are about 2 feet tall by 4 feet wide and about 4 feet off the ground. What kind of curtains should I get to hide that? Should they reach all the way to the floor or just below the window? Thank!

If you want to hide the windows, don't use short curtains. I would use panels. Get a color to accent your room. What color is the? Hang the curtains high and let them sweep the floor, You can tie back or keep them pulled. If you keep them closed or tied back it will still make the windows appear much larger. If you want to the look wider, hang the rods quite a bit wider than the windows. That way they will appear very larger. Make sure you pull the curtains back only to the outside of the window. This way no one will realize how small they are. Don't worry, it will look great and you will love it. Accent with pretty pillows and knick knacks. If you can paint, a light creamy yellow with white ceilings and trim will make the room appear very large. I am seeing a pretty greenish gold silk like fabric. You can pick these curtains up very cheaply or make them youself. Check out HGTV.com or watch HGTV. Shop thrift stores and yard sales too.
Enjoy you new apt!!!!!!

I had an ugly duck of a window that defied conventional curtains, so I got rid of them. I built a large shelf under the window and filled it with plants. Now the old rods support vines. I left the roller blinds to stop drafts on cold nights and for occasional privacy.

Dont' do it-as ugly as window units are, you dont want to put anything that may obstruct air flow across th condenser coil. Plus you dont want to put anything that may invite bugs and spiders to make a home in you unit and posibly making their way into your home. If you want A/C but dont want the window unit eyesore, install central air where the condenser looks more professional and acceptable.

if you really want to hide them, get curtains to the floor.
you could put up plant shelves as the other person suggested.
you could put up some window film to give you privacy, create an "stained glass" effect.
i did this and it looks great..
go to www.solutions.com or www.improvementcataloge.com they both sell them, or home depot sells them too. it is quite easy to put up, and when you move, you can just remove it..
good luck

I would use beautiful ceiling to floor curtains. Horchow has really expensive looking drapes at reasonable prices.
