I have a vacation home in PA which I visit about 1-2 times a month. I have always turned off the hot water heater when I leave and was recently told that I should leave it on which I have been doing since being told this. I leave the heat on in the house (also electric) with the thermostat set to 55. Is there any reason to leave that hot water heater going when no one is there? I would hate to pay the extra electric if its not necessary. Thanks for any info on this subject.

I have a GE Smartwater RO unit under my sink (dual stage) which I just got up and running with new pre and post filters and a new membrane, after it being out of use for quite some time (I've only lived here a couple months.)

I sanitized the system and purged it 3 times, then tasted the water. While there is a noticeable difference in the salt level, it is still there. My well can run from deathly salty to fairly mild.

Regardless of the salt level in the well, shouldn't the RO have removed the majority of the salt content? Because I'm still tasting it, would purging the unit a couple more times help?

Unit appears to be getting signal from remotes (blinking on back of unit) but no response from unit. Control inside garage is working but blinking. Something was stuck under door (about 2-3 inches high). Problem started after that. I did cut off power on the panel but blinking continues. ANY HELP??? Is there a way to reset this???

We have carpenter ants and pest control is not working. they put down ant bait over a week ago and the ants are still coming in as they were before the ant bait. we have a very clean home and food is stored properly. We wipe our counters down with clorox clean-up and they just show up somewhere else in the house like a clothes sloset or the laundry room. someone said that we should try equal sugar substitute and the aspartame kills them. does this work? and are there any other suggestions? The ants are relentless and i'm getting very frustrated

I just moved into a house, it's only around 30 years old, but it looks like they have never redone the kitchen cabinets. the appliances are at least 10 years old, but the cabinets are older. when i open them, they smell like old musty cabinets. I don't even want to put my dishes or food in them. I'm afraid that my dishes will start to smell like them after being in them. I've already washed them down, but they still smell terrible.

I live in an old house, built in about 1950, right now my bath tub faucet is really leaking alot. I'm guessing its just a washer needs to be replaced, but I need to turn the water off first.

Well, I looked for a local shutoff to the tub, but can't find one. I even checked the crawl space.

I'm on a community well so there is no water meter at my house. There is a circular hole right in front of my front yard water tap, and about 3 feet down I can see a nut. Well my landlord had left me with a T shaped bar she said was for turning off the water, however I can't find anything that can be operated by that t-bar, its just a rusty old nut about 19mm in size. Well I got a socket and hooked about 6 extentions together to reach down there and turned it clockwise but didn't do anything, no matter how far I turned it either direction nothing changed, now it seems to just spin both ways with no resistence.

My husband and I have been renting a small home on a concrete slab for almost two years now. Last year around this time we noticed these flying insects. This year there are many more and we have come to realize that they are termites. They seem to be coming out of the woodwork. We are moving into a new home in about two weeks and I am very, very worried that will will carry the termites with us to the new home. Is this possible?

With recent cold weather in Southern California dipping to the low 30s at night during the Winter, my Meyer Lemon tree froze.

While the fruit itself experienced NO DAMAGE (believe me, I was totally surprised), the leaves of the tree leave me wondering what's going on.

I have trimmed off/pruned everything that is dead - anything brown. There are SOME green leaves left, but the ones that are left are dried out looking/curling. Should I trim those off as well?

And if I see one or two healthy branches left, is there any hope for the tree to come back and at what point in the Spring should I begin to feed it to prepare it to come back in order to produce flowers/fruit? Or is there there no hope at this point at all?

Please advise. Thank you for any/all help with this.

My mother in-law has a Kenmore gas range apox. 15 years old. Her eletronic timer/clock isn't readable. The LED display is EXTREMLY dim. I have tried to get a replacement but have been told by Sears that the manufacture is no longer making that part.
I am looking for used part supplier or any other ideas.

I would like to fence off part of my backyard for our 2 small dogs... Its a rectangular area (10ft x 5ft) and I would only need one of the 10 feet sides to be fenced off with a gate because the other three sides are concrete wall. Any ideas how I could do this by myself to save money?
