My husband and I have been renting a small home on a concrete slab for almost two years now. Last year around this time we noticed these flying insects. This year there are many more and we have come to realize that they are termites. They seem to be coming out of the woodwork. We are moving into a new home in about two weeks and I am very, very worried that will will carry the termites with us to the new home. Is this possible?

No....Even if you had a few stow-aways, they could not survive with out their queen.

possibly could

the swarmer that you see are actually off spring kings & queens. From the time they swram they got about 24 hour to find suitable living conditions.

When I say suitable I mean cellulouse produts and moisture. If the conditions are right, you can very well carry them with you.But I highly doubt it.

Generally they attack your sill plate and floor joists as well as other areas where wood contacts your foundation.I have seen scenarios where they were in furniture on a 2nd floor of house,I once inspected.

If conditions are right I heard of swarmers being carried by the wind currents up to 2 miles away.

Everyone thinks that you need soil but I have seen where they infest in rafters where leaky roofs are evident, that is what you call a satelite termite colony, which is baically an off spring of the main colony.

Exterminator

this scenario is based on the fact you are dealing with Subterranean Termites.

I suppose you can if you try really hard. ;)

Seriously, probably not.

If you are buying the new home, make sure you had it inspected for termites before taking possession! (I learned this the hard way, and was happy to pay for the inspection on my new house prior to purchase)

Bugs that WILL hitch a ride on your belongings:
fleas, body lice, head lice, bed bugs (you can bring these bad boys home from even good hotels in the US now), mold spores/fungus, and kids (just kidding about the kids).

If you have pets or any of these things, make sure the new place is clear of them and sanitize everything before bringing it into the new place. Mold will not thrive in dry areas with adequate ventillation.
