its not leaking at any fittings

First, shut off the water valve feeding the water heater. There should be a hose bib (what looks like a threaded pipe where you'd fasten a garden hose) near the bottom. Hook up the hose, and drain the remaing water out. While the water drains, get out the old mop and bucket.

I'm assuming it's a fairly old unit. The cheapest ones can go bad in as little as 5 years. A good one will last about 10-15 years easily. Home Depot & Lowes both sell good ones at fair prices with good installation prices and they'll do it quickly. If you go with a local plumber, you'll pay top dollar. If it's not a fitting somewhere, it's not likely it can be fixed. If you have any "rust" stains don't bother trying to see if it can be fixed, it's too late for that.

Good Luck!

1. Turn off all water coming in to the unit.
2. Drain all the water, using a garden hose.
3. Call a plumber if you haven't already, because it's time to purchase a new water heater. More than likely the bottom has rusted out. When you install your new heater, be certain to purchase a pan to place under the new unit, so if this happens again, you won't have water damage.

Chances are your hot water heater as rusted and you will need to replace it soon . It is running all the time as it keeps filling up the water that is leaking. And it will get worse.

Turn off the water supply, gas, and/or electricity to the unit. Use a garden hose to drain the tank outside. Call a plumber to replace unit.

It may be rusting out. My husband says that's not uncommon. We had to change ours out not long ago. It's best to get it done before more of it gives away and you end up with a flood on your hands. We got ours at Home Depot. They were as reasonably priced as any place. I think we paid a little under $300.

replace it. If it`s not a fitting or the drain valve it`s worn out.
