Get you a steel rod approx 3 or 4 foot long and mark you sewage pipe coming out from the house and just start driving the rod down out from
the house every so often until you hit something solid. This will probably be the top of your tank. You have to find the lid by digging down from where you hit the top.

I don't kow where you live, but in California, there will be a plot plan filed with your local building department (city or county) that will show the location of the sptic tank and leach field.
I you already know where the tank is, you might as well dig down to the top and "prospect" for the lids, as a probe will only tell you taht you've hit the tank! A stiff steel rod about 3/8' to 1/2" will help you find the edges of the tank. If you locate the four corners, the two lids will be about 1/3 of the distance in from each end.

If you have a basement, check out where the main sewer goes out of the house. Then go outside the house in the same area and start poking a metal rod of anytype into the ground about 5 feet out from the house. The metal rod does not have to be anything fancy, just a small solid metal rod, about 3 feet long should do it. Tell the hardward guy what you are doing, he can set you up. The cover will be anywhere from 1 to 3 feet under the ground and you will have to dig to find it.

Find all of the paperwork from your home purchase. You are likely to have a drawing with the location with the septic inspection report. If not, check with the local health department if they still have the plans.
If you get snow, after a good snow look over lawn in direction of septic. The snow will be noticably thinner over the septic tank.

The probe will help you find the tank itself, but most lids are concrete, so you may need to do some digging after you get the tank located.

Look for a PVC pipe that rises a few inches above the ground, and that's where your septic tank is. The tank will be buried ten to twelve feet below the pipe and to get to it you have to dig the earth up with shovel or sometimes a back hoe.
