I'm in the oil finish camp for that piece, too. Either boiled linseed or tung oil will work wonderfully. Plan to work on it - hand rub a coat on, let it dry, and keep applying coats until the wood won't absorb any more. With the tight grain of walnut, it won't take more than two coats, I'll bet.
After it is good and dry, buff it with a terrycloth rag. I wish there was a way to post pictures here. I'd love to see the piece.

Oh how I hate it when people want to polyurethane everything. Tung oil is a nice finish, I prefer boiled linseed oil. It's a little cheaper. Just wondering why you chose walnut over oak for a craftsman style piece. Not very traditional of you!

You can finish it any number of ways, but what you choose will determine how much upkeep you will have. Oiling is a beautiful finish for any natural wood grain. It does have some drawbacks though. You need to re-oil it when it starts to look dull /dry to keep the beauty. How often depends on how dry the air in your house is and the type of wood.
You can also use a sealer and polyurethane it for a natural no hassle finish. Or seal /stain/ polyurethane to match any other wood finishes in your bedroom.
The last type of finish is paint, and here there are a number of options... latex of course, but if you want colour and the grain to show through also try milk paint. It has a translucent finish, and how much shows through depends on the number of coats you apply. Lastly oil paint which I do not recommend on furniture at all

In my opinion, it would be a crime to finish a custom walnut piece of furniture in anything but Tung Oil.
It is easy to apply, doesn't require sanding between coats (maybe a rubdown with a scotch-brite pad), and after three or four coats applied with a soft cloth, gives a finish as smooth as a baby's bottom.

. If you go to the website Woodcraft.com they have a finish called General finish. That is the brand name, it comes it two parts, Arm-R-Seal, and Seal-A-Cell. The Arm-R-Seal is the top coat, and the Seal-A-Cell you put on first. Between each coat you want to rub it down with 4-000 steel wool, get the kind with no oil in it, the steel wool that is. The Seal-A-Cell you want to put down one coat. The Arm-A-Seal put down as many as you like till you get the finish you want. This is a clear finish, and it really brings out the beauty of the wood. A few drops of lemon oil will do the trick to keep it looking good. Good Luck.
