I just moved into a house, it's only around 30 years old, but it looks like they have never redone the kitchen cabinets. the appliances are at least 10 years old, but the cabinets are older. when i open them, they smell like old musty cabinets. I don't even want to put my dishes or food in them. I'm afraid that my dishes will start to smell like them after being in them. I've already washed them down, but they still smell terrible.

I am trying to find out the best way to see if the landlord will do a remodel, since I rent. I know that is the best solution, it'll only help out the value of his house!

You can totally eleminate old inside cabinet and drawer smell by using a misture of ordinary mineral oil and regular wood alchol.

Mix about a pint of mineral oil with 1/2 cup of alchol a and then brush it onto the surfaces inside and out. The smell will disappear almost instantly. That because the alchol and mineral convert that part of the aging wood which smells into a new odorless compound and completely seal the wood's surface against further manufacture of odor producing compounds.

This is a commonly used practice in old antiques as it doesnt cause a loss in value such as paint would and it offers clear protection for years to come and preserves the wood.

Buy the Mineral Oil at any drugstore as well as the alchol. Just ordinary mineral oil and rubbing alchol work just fine.

I have the perfect product to get rid of the odor that I've used for years and know dozens of other people that use it. It is a product called FRIDGE IT odor absorbers. It is a little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great. It works so much better than baking soda and all those sprays and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. Also, alot of sprays have warning statements about being eye irritant. The carbon literally absorbs and eliminates the odors and works for a long time. Just place a couple of these in the cabinets. I use this product everywhere including car, storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash and have friends that use it on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like walmart and linens and things. I also think camping world sells it. Definitely worth trying.

I'm sorry for this. the musty smell is most probably mold. the mold can be behind the wall or embedded in the wood of your cabinets. Best case scenario is to replace all your cabinets. Costly chore I know. Second is to wash them down thoroughly with Clorox. repaint them is another option.
good luck. I hope someone can give a better answer then me. I'm curious as well

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.
