I'm a dentist.

I'm sure you all know that medicine is an extremely diverse science that includes every single aspect of the body (mouth included). If it's related to the human body, it's part of medicine.

Not so with dentistry. Dentistry is defined as the evaluation, diagnosis, prevention and/or treatment (nonsurgical, surgical or related procedures) of diseases, disorders and/or conditions of the oral cavity, maxillofacial area and/or the adjacent and associated structures and their impact on the human body.

Hence, while a practicing dentist must know at minimum something about virtually every area of medicine, dentistry itself is limited to the head and neck (and mind you, only one dental specialist--oral surgeons--treat areas outside of the oral cavity).

Does a profession treating a very specific area of the body need to have NINE different specialists?

A doc for the gums. A doc for the roots. A doc for crowns. A doc for fillings. A doc for braces, etc. etc.

I'm a dentist.

I want to know: if you went to your dentist for a toothache and he told you that you had to see an endodontist for the root canal, would you find it ridiculous that there is a doctor who specializes in doing root canals?

If you went to your dentist and he told you that you had gum disease and referred you to a periodontist, would you find it ridiculous that there is a doctor who specializes in gum disease?

If you came to your dentist about a toothache, and he told you that the tooth was broken down and required a surgical extraction, and he was going to refer you to an oral surgeon despite the fact that you didn't want to be sedated during the extraction, would you find it ridiculous that your dentist would be unable to extract the tooth?

What I want to know is this: do any of you, the public, find it ridiculous that the dental profession has NINE specialists, in addition to general dentists?

Has anyone had a easy healing process from a wisdom tooth extraction? I had two wisdom teeth pulled on Friday and by the end of the night, I felt fine. Saturday, I was in a little pain, but not much. Today, I feel great. I heard so many horror stories, it scared the daylights out of me. Can anyone else relate to what I just went through? So far everyone that I spoke to, had a really hard time healing.

okay so i've been wearing the clear essix reatiners fo about 3 days now and I'm going to a Disneyland with school to perform (orchestra) for the heritage festival on April 13-16..so that's about 3 days and 2 nights or so cuz we arrive back home on the 16th....okay so the trip is in 19 more days (today is march 25, 2007) and so here's the question:

If I don't wear my retainer for those 3 days or so with my teeth shift significantly?????? I'll be wearing the retainer for 2.5 weeks or so before the day of the trip and should I wear it all the time during the trip?? We're going to go out alot and eat at random times and do alot of things.....so should I also just wear the reatainer at night during the trip??????

And yes I know..if I don't want to have braces again then I have to wear the retainer 24/7...but I want to have a great time without by retainer getting in the way by being a hassle while everyone is out...sigh....so plz answer all the questions above plz...thanks...

I'm getting braces soon. I already have the spacers and they are painless.

What about braces? Does it hurt getting them on? How much? From a scale of 1-10.

I'm also getting it on a school day. Will it affect my thinking?
Will it still hurt If I eat soup or drink?

I let my Wisdom tooth go to hell in a handbasket......I have what the dentist calls "Deep scaling" on my left side Wisdom tooth..Basically a hole that runs along the front of the tooth along the gumline...Food gets in it...YUKK

Last week I was woken up with a pain in that tooth/gum area that was worse than a gun shot to the foot! It was like spasms of hot, searing pain that lasted 20-30 seconds each!
It went away after 5 Aleve every 4 hours for 3 cycles in a row...
My Liver STILL functions...LOL...
Last night it happened again...Spasms of hot, searing painful contractions that Ambesol did not even numb! I squirted Ambesol into the "Deep scaling" hole along the gum line btw. That seemed to work after it triggered another series of contractions.....

It feels like the tooth cracked even more along the gumline and it exposed a nerve(?) I know I need the tooth yanked, Could it be a Root Canal issue?

I'm just wondering which type ("color", I guess) of soda rots your teeth the quickest? LoL.
(As in dark, I mean rootbeer, Coke, Dr. Pepper, etc. For light, Sundrop, Mt. Dew, Sprite, Sierra Mist, 7 up, etc.)

I am a quite pretty girl. You know - pretty skin, pretty eyes, long hair and so on. But my teeth are really crocket. They are not in line at all. My front teeth is behind the other teeth, and i also have some really ugly "wampire teeth". To be honest, My teeth are really ugly, and I know it! :( :(

But my question is: what do you think of people with crocket teeth like mine? Do you find it unatractive, if a person smiles, and shows some really crocket teeth??

Please be honest.

Hi,

Tomorrow I start a new job as a dental assistant, but have to paper chart. I am used to using the Kodak R4 system and haven't charted on paper before.

The practice I am going to has provided me with information on paper charting, but some things do not make sense, so I'm wondering if someone could help.

Firstly, there looks to a an L (meaning upper left quadrant) and then what looks to be a T. Then, there is another L (UL quadrant) and CE joined together in lower-case handwriting. Also, it lists VMK, but I have never needed to know what is VMK is in the previous practice (it was on the computer but a dentist never asked me to chart it).

I hope someone can help by clarifying the above.

Thank you in advance.

Kind regards.

I need a good amount of dental work down but my insurance isn't going to cover enough of the cost. I heard about colleges offering dentistry at a discount along with state assistance. My credit isn't that great so I doubt I could go that route. Can somebody give some advice as to what to do? I live in the state of TN.

Yes, it is! Here's how you do it (keeping in mind that this cannot, legally, be taken as medical advice since only a medical doctor can prescribe such a thing):

Natural, organic raw foods. Make sure the meat you eat is free range, organic, and without any preservatives.

Astaxanthin. 16-20mg per day, or to bowel tolerance.

High amounts of calcium, potassium, boron, and magnesium. Coral calcium is good for this.

Vitamin C to bowel tolerance.

Do all the cleanses (kidney, liver, colon, parasites, candida, heavy metal, full body fat cleanse)

There you have it. If you have receding gums, you can now shock your dentist in just a few months or even weeks.

While cleaning my teeth, the dentist was making small talks and even told me a few jokes. Somewhere in the middle of the jokes and the high whirring noise of the sucking and scaling machines, I heard something about x-rays and pictures and a panoramic of my teeth. I have never had my pictures taken at the dentist before, so I assumed he was talking about x-rays in general. After the cleaning, I was still a little disoriented when he proceeded to take the photos (and I mean regular photos like you and me would take with a digital camera, NOT x-rays). He took 1 of my teeth, and one of my full face. To be honest, I was a little surprised and uncomfortable, especially when he took the picture of my full face, but I thought no harm done, plus they were really nice to my 3-years old, so I just went along with it. To make a long story short, a series of x-rays were taken after the photos, then I was sent to the receptionist to schedule an appointment. And that was when the receptionist...
