This is my first Thanksgiving married to my husband but I have been to his grandparents house on Thanksgiving before (past 2 years while dating) but this year I have been reading things about Turkeys being crammed tightly into henhouses and having their throats slit while conscious and all these horrible things well while I am not vegatarian or vegan I do not want to eat meat this holiday season to help not so many Turkeys suffer I know I am just one person but its really important to me we are eating at his grandparents house first then my parents late in the day I know my family will understand but how do I tell his family that I do not want to eat Turkey while I am there without seeming rude or selfish or stupid?
My husband usually makes my plate and I would just tell him no turkey and explain to him why and he would understand BUT his grandma likes to make sure everyone is eating EVERYTHING she cooks and her heart would be broken if I didnt have her precious turkey on my plate????

I don't really eat meat. Will eat fish once in a great while, maybe even some chicken. Just not a big meat eater. But having a roomie that SAYS that they are 'vegan' has me wondering just what is acceptable and non offensive to do when they are around.

Suggestions?

I mean would it? As a vegetarian or vegan how much does it matter to you (us)? We gave it up either way..and can live without it just as well (if not better in many cases)...so how much does it really matter? Why is this such an "issue" especially around here? What would it change if we were or weren't supposed to eat it? Not a thing for me. I'm asking this since it does seem to matter alot to vegetarians too...meateaters I get(defend their ways and all) but why would it matter so to a vegetarian/vegan? I don't mean to sound mean...I don't mean it that way at all...I just don't understand I guess...... If it matters to you..why?

When I tried to go vegetarian years ago, I had to stop, partially because I wasn't getting enough iron (I was 16 I didn't know anything about diets lol). My doctor at the time told me I was dangerously close to becoming anemic, hence why I was tired all the time.
Can someone tell me how I can make sure I get enough iron without having to go back to eating meat? (I don't want to take iron pills).

My 15 year old son decided to become vegan, which I support. I support all of the kids and their new encounters, experiments & such, but I am going to go BROKE feeding him! LOL!
I am making 2 different dinners nightly! The food is so expensive and I am still learning how to cook most of it! LOL it is am adventure for both of us. He is serious, it has been going on now for 5 months.

I do not know the exact quote in the Bible but there is a verse that explains that animals were created by God for the use of humans to provide for food and clothes.

Is there a connection with atheists and being for animal rights because if you do not believe in God then you feel that humans and animals are on the same level?

I am having a VERY competitive bet with my older brother. He says no, there is not protein in spinach/vegetables - at least none that is there naturally. I say yes, there is. If I win, he does the dishes for a week. If I lose, I thoroughly clean his car. Can you give me a thorough answer WITH sources? And no vegetarian/vegan sources (he doesn't believe in that)? THANK YOU!

my dad usually cook dinners with meat (beef, pork). I am a vegetarian and i don't at beef or pork. What can I do or say to him so i can get out of eating it? I'm a newly vegetarian, so I'm really trying not to eat meat. Stopping myself from eating it isn't the problem...It's just when my dad cooks a big meal and whatnot. I don't want to hurt his feelings or give in. What can i do to make him buy none meat groceries?

I enjoy all foods, from the ethnic to the experimental. However, I want a book that has some good everyday type recipes that taste great without cheating with excessive butter and so forth. Also, being a student, I can't afford to shop at the local Whole Foods everyday (once in a while is of course OK), so it would be even nicer if the ingredients aren't too hard to find / expensive.. unless it's worth it (I don't mind shopping at ethnic markets.. I'm in the Austin area if that helps.) I'm just a meat eating bundle of contradiction, aren't I! Maybe I should simply ask the question, "What veggie cookbook would you recommend to friends?"

Thanks!

People, what in the hell is wrong with me?
i am on a strict diet now, not that i like it, but i have to.

the thing is i eliminated MEAT, GLUTEN/LACTOSE and by-products, EVERYTHING PREPARED ON THE FIRE like fried, boiled etc.

but WHY everytime i eat pretty much anything i get my breath stunk, skin pimpled and and stomac bloated as hell?

so i stick to only fruits, veggies, vitamin-mineral complex and special rice protein. those are the only products that don`t cause above mentioned troubles.

when i see someone eating a burger i get so jealous! their skin is clean, they don`t have halitosis because of it, they don`t get bloated.

i`d give anything and AGREE TO BE SUPERFAT- if only i could eat whatever i want w/o gettin bad breath, bloating and bad skin.

i saw my dentist yesterday and he said my teeth and gums are OK.

i get this kinda troubles when i eat ANYTHING inc. BREAD, MEAT, MILK.

except for veggies and fruits and special vegan proteins.

Why is this? Why do some of you claim a lofty moral high ground regarding your dietary choices and the "ethics" that go along with it?

What's so wrong about milk, eggs, honey and cheese? What's so terrible about bone char? They are just making use of the whole animal. That's being wise and respectful of the animal's sacrifice. I agree with you on the fur if it's just for fur or leather. But, if my husband or dad kills a deer or bear, and we use all the meat down to the bladders and bones, what's so wrong with processing the hides and making blankets?

Are you better than the Inuit, Tlingit, Chinook, Eskimo...etc whose diets are largely meat? What would you suggest to these people? To go vegan? In a traditional environment for their culture, how could they survive in such a harsh climate on such a diet? Where would they grow vegetables? How could they self-sustain without meat? Are they wrong as all of hell in your opinion for their culture?

Just curious.

I just bought a random fruit from the fruit and veg stall near me. It's yellow-orange on the outside, and has a dried leafy top like a tomato. I peeled it (but had to use a veg peeler), and the inside was textured a bit like a potato. It was very sweet, and I really like it. All I know is it began with a k. Can anybody tell me what it is?

I'm a busy mom and just wanted a healthy alternative to the hassle of juicing. I eat fruits and veggies also, but lately I've been lazy and just wanted something to bring to work that's healthy and easy and considering juicing. Apart from buying a juicer and buying certain vegetables to make the recipes so it is appetizing, I like V-8 and wanted to know if that's a good alternative to improve my health (low sodium version, of course, my blood pressure has been high lately).

sad around thanksgiving? this is my first vegetarian thanksgiving and it's making me really sad, being more aware about turkeys. i mean, thousands of them die this season, just so families can eat only part of them for one dinner.

it makes tears come to my eyes just thinking about it. do you have any advice of how to deal with this type of sadness?
