I've been eating soy products all my life. I grew up in Taiwan and have always had soya milk and tofu regularly. Now people in the west are saying it can harm you. So I'm confused. Since the East Asians have been eating soy products for thousand of years, does that mean they've been doing so without knowing that soya would harm them?

Nothing.

It's fashionable to say soy is bad for you but the so-called evidence for this is not supported by the FDA or the American Dietetic Association.

There is a fallacious argument that soy wasn't bad for Asian people because they "only used soy as a condiment." Not true. I knew Chinese people who ate tofu with sugar sprinkled on it for breakfast; I got the impression this was not unusual. Another thing; we all know that salt (sodium) is a bad for us when we eat too much--but what is salt used for? Hint--it's a condiment. Whether something is a condiment or not doesn't make any difference. That stuff about it being fermented or not doesn't make any difference either.

Allergy to soy is fairly common. For other people soy is not harmful. If it was, why doesn't our government print warning labels on tofu and soy milk like they do for tobacco and liquor?

I will make a prediction, in the future, after the soy nonsense has blown over; a bunch of so-called experts in the US will go on and on about the dangers of peanuts.

I just went to a two day conference given by a group of physicians and scientists; all of them were giving lectures about health and nutrition issues. Guess what--in two days, soy was never mentioned.

what confuses me most about it is the multitude of 'products' that are derived from real whole soy beans that are then generically labeled as 'soy' on ingredients of foods :/

often hard to know exactly what it is.

also, soy as a staple food is a very new thing, its traditional use was as a fermented condiment.

there hasnt been a lot of research or even anicdotal evidence, into the long term effects of it as a staple food. either way i believe one thing is clear, more unbiased research is required, and i wont take chances with over conumption of it untill then.

Why people think that it is so good for you that they over eat it and yet growing medical edvience is suggesting that eating too much soya is bad for you. Not even in Asian countries do they eat so much of it as compared to the western world and when they do there is a little meat with it to counter act some of the leeching effects of soya.
