Field trips are completely optional all the time. Your daughter is not forced to go on a field trip that goes against her morals and beliefs. That teacher could actually be fired for doing such a thing. I recommend to go talk to the principle and stand your ground and make sure your daughter has her voice heard. What are they doing sending kids to a slaughter house in the first place?? That is truly disgusting.

don't sign the slip and if the teacher takes your vegetarian to the slaughterhouse against your wishes you can sue the teacher especially if you have pictures of the field trip. I know one teacher that was sued in Canada. He's no longer teaching! He's a butcher in a supermarket now! Well the teacher might just wind up creating more vegetarians by taking people to the slaughterhouse! I was already vegetarian because of cost of meat. I had to go on trip to Slaughterhouse back in my school days. It just encouraged me to remain a vegetarian. I never even thought about suing the teacher but one of my classmates did! I was in the 7th grade when I had to go with the class to the slaughterhouse. The teacher said anyone that didn't go would get a failing grade! Well for me it was many years ago!
I know many vegetarians that became vegetarian just because they saw a slaughterhouse!

Maybe the field trip may help her to further form her views - and get the perspective from both sides...?
That being said, when I was in grade 1 a rodeo clown came to my school to do some demonstrations and I flat out refused to go - I spend some quality time in the library. I'm sure there's absolutely no way you can force a student to go on a field trip. Keep her home for the day?
Also, could you offer to chaperone the field trip so you can be there for your child?
Out of curiosity - what's the reasoning for a slaughterhouse for a field trip?

You can still send your child to school on the day of the field trip if you must attend work. However, if you have not given your permission for her to attend the trip, she will be placed in another classroom with a teacher who is remaining at school on that day. Depending on how many children are not attending, one teacher from that grade level may remain behind, or the children may be split up amongst teachers for other grade levels and given work to complete on their own, and/or complete and participate in work being done in the classroom where they are spending the day.
It is not abnormal for children not to attend field trips for a variety of reasons; parents don't want children far from home, they've already been to the destination as a family and parents don't see need for child to go again, etc.; money is usually not the issue because schools must ensure every child who wants to attend can attend.
I would just say something to your daughter like, "I respect your feelings, and you certainly don't have to attend." I would not do anything to make this situation a Situation. The more calm you remain, the better your daughter will be able to follow your example and remain calm,. She'll also learn that people do differ on their opinions, and that options do exist which should allow everyone to live harmoniously.

You have every right to keep your child from going on a field trip.
A slaughterhouse is a terrible idea for a field trip. I know a girl who was traumatized for life by a trip just like that. The teacher was a vegetarian who wanted to turn people off to eating meat. Children shouldn't be indoctrinated by teachers in this way.

Don't make her go! Take her to an animal sanctuary instead. Then, either write a letter requesting that the teacher make field trip choices that are respectful of ALL the children's values, or enroll he rin a nother school.
That is ridiculous, and so sad.

The teacher can "encourage" her to go if she so pleases.
She cannot, however, force her. Nor can it in any way negatively affect her marks in the class.
By law, in a public school system, they cannot force a student to do anything that is against their morals or religion. It's great spillover from the eighties decisions about requiring animal dissection in high school.
Bottom line, the teacher and the school MUST accept your request that your daughter not go on this trip, and provide proper accomodatioins for her during this trip.
By the way, what the hell kind of school sends nine and ten year olds to a slaughterhouse??? That is soooo many kinds of wrong...

What an awful field trip! Did you ask them the reason they feel it nessecary to take children to a slaughterhouse. We went swimming and did other fun things on field trips.
I'd ask the pricipal why she won't accept any notes....I'd contact the superintendent of your school district if that gets you nowhere. I'd ask them the reasoning behind the field trip..and tell them that her teacher wouldn't accept your notes to get answers to your questions. QUESTION everything...something smells fishy.

As others have said, just refuse to sign the permission slip. She cannot legally go to the field trip if you do not give your permission. Simply reassure your daughter that she does not have to go, so there is no need for her to be upset over it.
If the teacher is still encouraging her to go, even after notes asking her to stop, then go to the school and speak to the teacher directly. Explain to her your daughter beliefs and tell her to stop harassing and pressuring your daughter to go against her morals and values. You may want to add, if the harassment does not cease than you will speak to the principal about it,
A slaughter house is no place for any child to be. What happened to taking children to museums, planetariums and science centers? Personally I cannot see the educational value of taking children to a slaughter house.

Keep her home from school that day and send a note the next day. The teacher can not prevent you keeping her home. 4th grade seems very young to be going. What is the purpose of the trip?
It may be an inconvenience (you having to take a day off work) but if she is really that upset about it then it will be worth it for her peace of mind.
