I don't really eat meat. Will eat fish once in a great while, maybe even some chicken. Just not a big meat eater. But having a roomie that SAYS that they are 'vegan' has me wondering just what is acceptable and non offensive to do when they are around.

Suggestions?

It's a two way street. Be respectful, yet don't change your lifestyle for this person. Tell him/her when you're going to cook meat and at least be courteous about it. If that person is still high and mighty with their ways, request a transfer.

I gotta tell ya, nothing but NOTHING smells worse than fish cooking; I think that scent would offend even some omnivores. Since you only eat fish and chicken once in a great while, maybe you could not cook meat in the house and just eat it outside the home. Or buy precooked meat dishes that many grocery stores carry and eat them on compostable (as opposed to disposable) dishware. Or only cook meat when the vegan roomie is away for the evening and use dedicated cookware (i.e., don't use the vegan's cookware to make your chicken dish).

Just as long as you don't use their kitchen things you should be ok. Might be a good idea to wash your meat pots and plates (or at least rinse them) after you have your dinner. Speaking as a vegan, I have shared houses with meat eaters and it can be hard to wake up to frying bacon but as long as the meat eaters have cleared up the dishes after, it never caused any bad vibes. I knew they were meat eaters before I moved in with them so why would I complain about it ;) Then again I am a nice vegan who doesn't preach unless asked to.

BTW you say it like you aren't sure they are telling the truth? Are you suspecting they are a secret bacon muncher? heehee

As long as you don't wave meat in his/her face or give him/her a hard time, it shouldn't be a problem. Vegans and vegetarians are used to being outnumbered in social situations and always have to deal with people eating meat around them. Only the most militant will be offended by your eating habits if you carry them out respectfully.

Just as an FYI, the smell of meat can be quite disgusting to a vegetarian/vegan so I guess you may want to keep that in mind; crack open a window if you are cooking burgers or something.

If I am paying rent and utilities right along with them, that would pretty much entitle me to eat whatever the hell I wanted, whenever the hell I wanted. I'm sure no provisions would be made on their part for you. I find nothing more disgusting than watching a person eat a sandwich with sprouts hanging out the sides. Looks like some dried, overgrown sperm. But, I digress....

While some people on here have valid points in their answers, I personally would not be frying a hamburger while they are in the room. I'm just saying...it's a little rude. Cook the meat in your own pots at least so that the "residue" of the meat is not present when they are cooking theirs.

Ask them how they would feel if you were to grill your meat? Does the smell of it bother them? Ask and you will know this way no feelings get hurt and you are not considered insensitive.

Set down & talk with them. IF they are mature, they understand you are not on their PATH.
I eat Vegan, but Meat, Fish etc are cooked in my house. Sometimes I have to burn incense to rid the after smell, but that is all.
I think if you are cooking animal flesh in your "common" kitchen you should always clean up after.
Living with someone is a 2 way street. They will have somethings they'll need to give on too.

the final subject that indignant me grew to become into this silly pc. I compressed some archives from (are you waiting for this one?) 50 days right down to 30 days (how long could the gadget wait till now compressing previous archives? &c.) and whamee! No pc! God, did that scare me! and then I realised how unhappy I felt and how indignant that this pc might dare to permit me down like that. How do you spell dependency? or possibly even co-dependency? So humorous now, in spite of the indisputable fact that it wasn't humorous then. lots of circumstances we can look back and spot how silly we've been being and how we reacted, yet while it particularly is occurring for actual the 1st time by way of it particularly is actual and it hurts and you do no longer understand what to do.

No. 1 The fact that they are Vegan isn't YOUR issue...it's THEIRS
No.2 Although it is admirable that you don't want to offend them by doing what is right for YOU, you shouldn't be expected to change your behavior in order to keep the peace
Live your life as you would if they weren't there. If anything is said, simply reply, 'I don't criticize or condemn how you live your life....I would appreciate the same consideration. Thank you.'

a few of my freinds dont eat meat around me, and to be honest it would be nice not to have to see people eating meat, but i dont go insane if they do eat it around me. some vegans have different ideas and hate it when people eat meat around them.

however, when the whole place stinks of meat when my mums cooking i find it discusting (i dont really want to eat when i can smell rotting flesh, its quiete off-putting) and quiete often will eat in a different room, but i asume that wont be an option for him, so basically try and keep away from the smelly stuff and he probably wont mind
