Vegetarian & Vegan - May 2007

We have been told that a low fat vegan diet can lead to reduced testosterone levels and cause significant problems with hormones. At first we thought these were just some sort of scare tactics but after researching have found that these claims are in fact valid. That's pretty scary stuff. And we are also concerned with the other obvious nutritional deficiencies in the diet and would like to know what vitimans and supplements he should be taking. I think becoming a vegan is a noble thing, but do not think it is worth risking ones own health to become one. I would like for people to share with me the problems and dificiencies that they have endured as a result of the vegan diet so that my nephew can potentially avoid them if he does in fact decide to go vegan. I will appreciate your input. I have read many of the answers in this forum and have always been impressed with how helpful people are. I look forward to insight provided by the many thoughtful vegans in this forum.

How can they take the life of an innocent animal and not feel any remorse?

I personally believe in having good morals and there is no way I could take he life of an innocent animal and not feel remorse. Do meat eaters even have a heart?

When I am at school everyone around me is a vegetarian. I want to become one because I don't want to feel like an outsider. It seems RUDE eating meat around them; and I am really trying hard to change. At my home everyone eats meat everything has some type of meat product in it; so that means I wont be eating. Am I being shallow? Any suggestions or comments will be highly appreciated =D
P.S. I cant eat eggs due to an allergy

the children will inherit the characteristics of the potential father to be? He is frail, malnourished, rather sickly, and most certainly not the picture of health. I realize that these characteristics are only a result of his diet, so it is my hope that they will not be passed down to the children. But I'm just not sure and am a bit concerned.

...not just random recipes.
:)

My central air is broken, so I am looking to make a more *refreshing* feeling dinner tonight, and I would like a really delicious salad and vegan dressing that wont take forever to prepare.

I would prefer it to not have nuts because I don't like mixing crunchy and non-crunchy foods.... I am almost considering something hummus-y, but all yummy ideas welcome.

Thanks
:)

My vegan girlfreind and I were out for a drive and had a flat tire. When she was changing it, she hurt her back. She had only gotten one lug nut off and was already hurt. It took her forever to finish the job. Fortunatly I had a newspaper to read and some beef jerkey to nourish myself while I patiently waited for her to finish changing the tire. She seems to get hurt easily. Is she perhaps defective, or is this common place amongst vegans to get hurt so easily?

I have noticed today and on a few occasions that the vegetarians on YA seem to be a militant angry lot with a strange superiority complex over those of us who eat meat.
Just two examples from today. One person, probably whilst wearing a cardigan and sporting a beard, accused meat eaters of being 'just like peadophiles' How he makes that link I will never know. Plenty more seem to think that vegetarians are somehow intellectually superior. Now, most of us meat eaters are a laid back bunch. We dont claim that being a meat eater makes us any better than you. We dont try to convert anyone and I never accused anyone of a sex offence based on their evening meal. Veggies. Why so angry?

When I tell people I am a vegetarian one of two things always seems to happen. Either they look at you like you have somehow betrayed their trust. Or they tell you about another time they have met one of "You people". Not that it is anything hostile that has happened also. Just well it seems like no matter how simple something like telling someone "you" think veggies are the way to go for "you" should be, it never is.

Why would anyone be a vegetarion? It is natural for human beings to eat meat. And if they were right, then why isnt there any other animals that require meat becoming vegetarians? All vegetarians do is disrupt the food chain and it also pisses me off when they look down on "meat-eaters" for doing what naturally comes to them. Anyone agree

People in this section seem to be very aggressive in either defending or attacking vegetarianism but I don't find that to be the case in real life. I've only found people curious about being vegetarian, and I've certainly never met anyone who would ask rude questions or make the outrageous statements I've read here. What gives? Why the hostility? Do any of you find these kinds of questions or statements in real life?

wut i do is only eat highly prossesed milk and egg, just thr byproducts like sodium styeral lactate and lactic acid and only when there at the bottom of the ingrediant list.(ingrediance are listed the most used in food to least used) but if there is milk or eggs accually in the ingrediants in the beggining of the list i dont eat it. and i NEVER eat just plain eggs or dairy; or bake with them unless its only like one egg white for a party or somethin.i figure its a lot easier when you dont have to memorize all the ingrediance derived for milk or eggs, i already do that for ingrediance derived from animals. PETA's website says that eating small amounts of animal byproducts is ok, as long as you dont overdue it (for instance i eat animal crakers like crazy, but the last ingrediant is skim milk, but since the crakers are most likely only brushed with skim milk before baking ) is it ok to call myself a vegan?

Unfortunately the only time that I can eat meat is when I am out. Because my parents are religious (hindu/buddhist) they don't permit meat in the house. Does anyone know What Vegetarian Foods Are High In Protein???

Ive been wondering which kind of tomato to eat, the domestic tomato or the smaller cherry tomato by comparing the nutritional values. Also i was wondering if the cherry tomato too contains the cancer fighting mineral called the "lycopene". Sincerely hope that anyone who knows the answer could help me. Thanks.
