When I tell people I am a vegetarian one of two things always seems to happen. Either they look at you like you have somehow betrayed their trust. Or they tell you about another time they have met one of "You people". Not that it is anything hostile that has happened also. Just well it seems like no matter how simple something like telling someone "you" think veggies are the way to go for "you" should be, it never is.

Most definitely.
That was funny. You definitely get a lot of weird reactions.
:)

I guess the oddest reactions I get are from ex-vegetarians. They have this look like they are fugitives. And their eyes say, "Oh no; I have been runnin' from the law for five years now... they finally caught me."
...As if I am going to chase them down into the sewers or something. And I'm just like, looking for a vegetable sandwich.
:)

But yeah, they then want to tell their stories about how their boyfriend ate meat, or how they decided they wanted chicken and fish.... and I'm still just looking for a vegetable sandwich. What they eat is certainly none of my business. :)

Often people asky me why I am vegan... I first of all say do you really want to know? If they seem reasonable and not just becuase they want to give me some clever answer then I tell them that it's a long story and has to do with when I was a child and my dad kept pigs.

I don't go into more details as I have found out that if people really want to find out more they will ask you again at another time.

If people just want to be silly about it I just say I am morally allergic to any animal products and leave it at that.

You also have to get used to the what do you eat for protein then... and do you miss not eating a nice juicy steak...

If I get really fed up when people keep trying to be funny, I get stuck into all the negative reasons about drinking milk and dairy - which I will not go into here.

I was laughing when you described the looks you get - I get those too! People suddenly see us in a different light, like we've been to Area 51, we're not sharing what we know and cannot be trusted. LOL.
My best friend (God love him!) rather enjoys putting me on the spot in front of strangers and mutual friends. Whenever we're eating or the subject of food comes up, he practically shouts at everyone, "You know that ELLIE'S A VEGETARIAN, don't you?!" It's as if I'm the side show and his job is to bring me out for the masses to see, to poke and to ask a lot of questions. It's comical. I just have fun with it.

Yeah, it's funny when these people meet others who have been say, vegan their whole life, where in fact there whole family and pretty much everyone they know in their extended family are also vegan or vegetarian... "So, how did you become vegetarian and why?" "Um... I was born... I don't call myself a vegan or vegetarian, I just eat as a human should naturally... how did you become a meateater?"

that is kind of funny...
I have met several Vegetarians and when they mention their choice...I usually say " not me" and I have on three of those four occassions been then treated like a stone age creature.

Replete with lectures on dairy and harmful hormones in meat products--maybe they are giving you those looks to avoid hearing a lecture that you most likely had no intention on giving.

but for myself... next time I meet one of "YOU" people I am going to lie and say "me too!" and move away fast so I don't get lectured on my terrible diet.

so...in short ( too late!) it goes both ways with this situation.

now I am off to get a chicken leg!
