people will ask me why i am vegan. and i am just dying to tell them about what happens to that piece of animal muscle they have on their plate.but i also am very aware that the #1 thing omnivores dislike about vegans/vegetarians is that they try to convert them. as any one who felt strongly about a certain cause would want to do, i want to send the message out about the horrible reality that comes with the meat/dairy/egg industry that many many people don't realize. but i dont want to give people the message that all veggies do is try and brain wash them. where is the happy medium?

(i mean if i was an environmentalist, i would want to explain to people what could be done to help the earth. its the same thing with wanting people to understand vegan/vegetarianism, you know?)

please no rude answers. only helpful ones.

I'm seven weeks pregnant and craving MEAT all the time--any meaty dishes just sound so very good. And although I do eat some meat, I try and avoid eating too much, especially fatty stuff (it exacerbates my nausea), but unfortunately, other protein sources like beans and nuts are just NOT doing it for me! What shall I do?

Many vegetarians think that as they do not eat meat they are saving animals, do they realize that in the event of everybody turning veggie, there would be no animals. No cows,no sheep, no pigs.
Farmers are not philanthropists, they are not going to keep animals to feed the family moggy, therefore no cats, or dogs. I suppose of course you could grow your own and give the dog and cat a couple of mice a day.
Hang you on though, it would reduce global warming, no cow or dog farts...

I just watched this: http://www.peta2.com/p2vsk2_flash/index.html

So i guess, i'd have to be a real bastard to eat meat again... especially with so many alternatives out there. Never really agreed with breeding animals for food anyhow.

So back to my question, what kind of foods are there? Just need some suggestions.

Can anybody give me tips on going from a regular omnivorous diet to a vegan or vegetarian diet? I live with my grandma who loves to cook eggs/ham/bacon/any kind of meat quite often, and I have a metabolism problem that makes it very difficult for me to digest protein. There are no health food stores around my area, and the health food section in my local stores are very small/almost non-existent. Most of what I eat right now are carbs (such as breads, cereal, oatmeal), protein (which I shouldn't), and fats.) I need to find an inexpensive way to incorporate more fruits and veggies into my diet, but I don't know how I can... any suggestions? What do you usually shop for when you look for vegan or vegetarian foods? I'm just going on the diet type thing to stop myself from eating so much protein, and see how I feel after I begin the diet... . Also, do you think I would gain or lose weight on this diet/lifestyle change?

Would this be a major problem at a college campus where they usually serve mostly protein? They do have vegitarian choices... a salad bar and a bowl of fruit, thats it.. Back in my dorm room, I'd have a mini-fridge, and not much money....

I've seen a few questions where people are asking if a certain beer, wine or liquor is vegan, so what would make it non-vegan? I never knew that animal products were used in the process of making some alcoholic beverages. Can someone please enlighten me?

Were moving into our new home this weekend and he decided he wants to switch from being full time regular meat eater to my diet of strict vegetarian (no gelatin, broths, boulions, rennett. I bascially only eat SOME cheeses without rennett and organic freerange milk. (12 years veg now)
Hes all down for the switch (cause i wont be cooking it for him) but how do I ease him into this?
He seems nervous about it? What can I do for him to make this switch easy?

I'm vegetarian and eat nuts to get some protein. Most are like 17 grams of fat. That seems really high. How can a plant produce so much fat?
