I can not get my 5 1/2 year old Kindergarten student to sit down and learn how to read. He won't sound any words out he gets frustrates and wants to quit. I can't get him to focus enough or try to read any of the words. I have tried EVERYTHING and even tried with the preschooler books that only have 2 or 3 words in each sentence. Please help! I'm in a class called Student Government, and Im in charge of Fundraising. Thing is, we can't sell candy, and food on campus. So that cancels out A LOT of things. We can't do raffles and games of chance, either. We can hardly do anything IN school. What do you guys think that I can do, outside of school? Such as TV tapings and such. Any ideas? Thanks! (:

I'm at my wits end. I am a mother of a 13yr daughter. with severe learning disabilities. Her hand- writting ability is at kindergarten level. Her reading ability is 2nd grade at best. Her academics is 3rd grade functional. She has always been delayed in speech and motor skills(she didn't speak until she was 4( (even now its deaf tonal. she does have a mild hearing loss. Nothing that warrants a hearing aid) She has received speech,OT, and physical therapies since she was 2. The problem is not her delays its the fact she is intelligent enough to understand her delays and gets frustrated at her inability to perform or learn like other kids. She is not feeling as smart or as capable as other teenagers and is getting teased) She has begun to lash out verbally(this is not like her. She is always well behaved in class compared to other kids in SLD/ESE). She is BEAUTIFUL, But I feel her sprit is broken she has given up on herself and school she told me she wants to cut class and hide.

you would not be able to make it in today's society without knowing? And why was it important for you to be taught this?

Also, what is the one "Life Skill" you think high schools should teach our students now, but dont?

I asked for help from a teacher. 2 weeks ago, I went into his room to schedule a session where he can tutor me. We decided wednesday after school last week. I went in and he told me that he was busy and FORGOT that he had 2 meetings that day after school. We rescheduled for today after school. I went in to his class today and he said he can not do it today or for the rest of the trimester. Now that it ends the end of the trimester, and I don't know how to do my homework, I am failing the class, and am stressed out. We have 3 days left to get in all of our work. This is the only class that I have ever failed. I get over 100% in most of my classes and geometry is the only class that I don't understand. Are the exscuses he made good ones, and why do teachers get away with everything. What can I do if it is not right. Should I have to suffer because my teacher is dumb.

It seems laziness has become better than good work ethics. Isn't this kinda bad to be answering their questions for them? Does it send a message of "don't worry, someone else will do it"?

Essentially -- I have superb grades in all of my classes (as a sophomore) -- half of my main classes being honors, with basically straight A's in them so far. Anyway, I'm too young to take the SAT/ACT but what my school does (and what I assume many other schools do) is base our class selections on standardized "MAP Testing" scores. I received a 249 on reading/language which is very, very high and started getting recommended for AP courses in both English and US History. Unfortunately, I'm not interested in them and don't feel that I am ready for them and my scores are too high to be let out without a hard fight as both my history and English teachers are giving me huge pressure to take them. I am a HUGE procrastinator and never end up getting my work done at home (which would be required for an AP course); I'm highly organized but I would get overwhelmed just from the feeling of being in an AP course. Any recommendations on getting out of them? Am I too worried?
