Software - April 2007

My company is getting rid of old PCs and I'm considering buying one. They have completely wiped out the hard drive, so there is no OS installed at all. Previously it had Windows Me or 2000 on it (not sure which). Is it going to be foolish of me to think I can buy Windows XP and install it myself? What kind of problems can I expect to run into?

I edited one of my movies with windows movie maker. I want to try and upload it to myspace & tinypic. but when i right click and do properties the file type is still only by movie maker. how can i change it so its windows media player?

When I click on ms word, the office 2000 window pops up asking for a cd. The problem started around two months ago. I do not have a cd to install. How can I correct this problem without taking it in to shop-I don't want to get ripped off. I have done system restore before problems happened. Could I have accidently deleted ms word or other compoent that would make this happen. Help Please!

i have office 2003 teachers and student and its installed on my desk top and i wana put it on my lap top and i dont wana spend another $250 is there a way i can have it on both? its only licenced 4 one computer and i dont want to reinstall it every 60 days

i'm trying to convince my mom to get me and my little brother a Mac. but she said that she's not sure about it. because it might not have the useful programs on it like Powerpoint, Word, etc. and she's saying that it might not be able to install stuff like programs on disks(printing instanlling, etc). so i'm just asking if it is compatible. because me and my brother want to switch to a Mac. she said that if it can do what a PC can do, then she'll get it. so PLEASE give me a good answer so i can convice my mom, and you can get 10 points.

I'm reinstalling windows (using the dell CD) on a dell desktop but the computer was left in safe mode. The problem is that windows won't install unless the system is initially in safe mode. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I am doing an MLA format paper and on each right hand corner of each page, I need to put
MY LAST NAME, PAGE NUMBER.

The headers must be a half inch away from the top of the paper, and it has to be a different header for each page.

I know how to insert the headers already, but how do i get them a half inch away from the top, and how do i make the header on each page different?

I am getting a new computer and my old one has Windows 98 on it if I use a Windows XP start-up disk a.k.a (system restore CD) will the windows 98 reboot with the XP software? If not then what would happen?

I have some programs on CDs (Reader Rabbit series for babies and toddlers). When I install them, they put some stuff on my hard drive, but I still need to insert the CD to run the program. Is there a way I can get everything onto my hard drive so I can run the programs without inserting the CD each time?

I need to buy, for my company a version of Photoshop Elements 3.0. I know there is now a 5.0 and a 4.0, but our computers are ancient & the newer versions are all for Windows XP (we have 2000). I also know there are better Photoshop softwares and "bundles" but they won't let me buy any thing expensive. Photoshop Elements 5.0 is going for $99, but of course it won't run on Windows 2000. I need it ASAP & I have searched online everywhere. My boss does not want a used copy, must be new in a box, and he wants a CD eliminating me from finding a downloadable only version (I can download, but they also need to send me a CD). I found one on Amazon but it was $149 & I am not understanding how 2 versions ago could be more expensive than the latest.
