My company is getting rid of old PCs and I'm considering buying one. They have completely wiped out the hard drive, so there is no OS installed at all. Previously it had Windows Me or 2000 on it (not sure which). Is it going to be foolish of me to think I can buy Windows XP and install it myself? What kind of problems can I expect to run into?

I have found that XP runs on older equipment better than ME and 2000.

You can get a generic XP CD, or one for that brand of pc. Boot from the CD, and it will install itself almost automatically.

XP is definitely the best way to go.

You will need the OEM version of the xp cd. The Upgrade version requires proof of ownership of a previous version of windows.

Actually it's pretty simple. Put the xp cdrom in the cd drive restart your pc. It should show a message asking if you want to boot from the cd, just hit a key.
It will display a message asking if this is a new install or an attempt to repair an existing installation. Choose new install, format with NTFS, and follow the on screen instructions.

Good Luck

Windows XP is generally known as the user-friendly OS when installing. Of course, you will have to read all the instructions on the screen carefully. You shouldn't EXPECT any problems, but if any occur, there is informatino provided to help you with that. And there's always the Microsoft customer service that you can call. But I think most people should be able to do it on their own. That's just my opinion.

Hi. U'r on my camp. I need some more info about disk partitonis. Got any? OK. Strait. If U'r OS XP whatever is on the main Disk (C:) U may reinstall U'r OS and give up the virus (I doubt if U have NIS (Norton Internet Security) installed). U have to locate the virus - if U have other partitions - and then get a decision. Give more details and 90% is OK. Luck.

don't use linux unless u are a advanced user of computers!

Go buy XP and go for it!!!!

to install windows:
1. turn on comp and insert CD-Rom, then turn off
2. startup your computer and enter the BIOS or BBS popup screen before the computer laods.
3. go into boot devices and select your CD-Drive as your first boot-up preference.
4. Turn off your computer and then turn back on.
5. And that will bring you to the widows startup menu

this works everytime!!

problems:
Have your CD-key on hand
know what type of internet connection you are going to be running
it should take about 1 hour to complete (longer if you are new to computers)
make sure your computer's specifications can handle the new OS

If you buy the XP disks you just get that - XP.
No MS office, no other programs other than the very basics.

If you're starting over anyways, grab a blank CD and use imgburn ( http://imgburn.com/ ) to burn an Ubuntu ( http://ubuntu.com/ ) or Kubuntu ( http://kubuntu.com/ ) .iso on there.

Put the burned CD in the CD tray and restart the computer. It doesn't need a hard drive at all to run - it loads into the computer's RAM (temporary memory).

K/ubuntu comes fully loaded and thousands of other programs are just a few clicks away - you just look them up in a built in installer, it grabs the stuff needed and installs it all.

It's free in both senses of the word - free of cost and free of obligations.

if the drive is wiped clean you might be able you to install winXP with no problem.if you are the only one using the computer don't put passwords in for administrator or if you do make sure you write them down or its something you remember.
just do it went you have plenty of time and read everything on the screen good don't rush your choices.
choose nfts file system and let them partition the drive and have the windows genuwine number handy

As long as the computer was running Xp before it is easy (you will have to buy the full edition not the upgrade)

Well the cd should give you step by step instructions, and unless your menatlly disabled you should get it. Then again you could just save money for a new computer with the programs already installed.
