Security - February 2007

I recently changed the settings on my computer and now I've forgotten the admin and my own password! These 2 are the only ones that have adiminstration status. The other accounts I put on limited. and of course I do know those passwords, but the 1 you need you don't remeber. PLease help me I needed to download something and now I can't, because the user is set on lilmited!!

I'm looking around for anti-virus and internet security software - usually I use Noton Internet Security. Someone has suggested AVG - what exactly is this and is it trustworthy? People have also suggested free downloads such as lava soft, are these genuine and to be trusted, why is it free, what do they want from you in return?

So many of the so called free software will identify the cause of the problems, in my case, 400, but must collect $37.00 to get rid of them. Is this on the level? I just want a good "free" software that will get rid of these. I don't want to erase my photos, but I don't care about anything else. When the scan asks if you want to get rid of items, how do I know I am not just erasing photos, and how do I know it is telling me the truth?

I have an idea for a website. I have been trying to understand this "copyright" and "trademark/servicemark" jargon but I'm lost. What I want to do is protect the "process" that occurs when memebers join my site. Similar to what Ebay has. How did they do it? How do I keep the CC from downloading all of my site's content and opening up the biz in a differnt name?

I think someone has hacked into my account or something. My sent items appear marked as "read" most of the time. But not every sent email is marked that way. Even when I change my password, this happens. What the heck? Is someone reading my email? Thanks. Kristie

I downloaded something, and the second it finished downloading I knew I downloaded spyware. McAfee didn't detect it, nothing detected, but I got numerous spyware ADS and popups, you know the kind that are all YOUR COMPUTER IS INFECTED, DOWNLOAD "SPYDOCTOR" or something, and I got toolbars that were obvious were from spyware. I can't get rid of it, so I restored my computer to an earlier time, and it seems like I got rid of it, how can I know for sure?

Can you tell me if they find when logging into e-mail would you feel its secure? Does the 'https' & lock bottom right come up to show its a secure putting in email and password? I have contacted Yahoo a couple of times about it, have got no reply. See can someone give me an explaination does it come up on their computer!

I'm looking for a free firewall, me and my husband have tried:

Comondo & Zone Alarm (at seperate times obviously) and to be honest they both have had conflicts with programs (zone alarm had too many conflicts to name plus it hogs memory and system mechanic is claiming that comondo isn't on which has us concerned...) so we were wondering if you could recommend a good free firewall, a fully functional free firewall not a 30 day trial (like sunbelt).

please provide a link too and if you wish some info too
