Kaspersky can act like malware itself... If price isn't a factor, I'd enlist the aid of a professional IT consultant who specializes in security. Personally, I would go with the ZoneAlarm suite. You should also invest in a hardware firewall. On top of that, put someone in charge of making sure that maintenance (definition/software updates, then full scans) occurs weekly (full virus, malware, spyware, adware). Don't rely on just one program to take care of all that automatically. Use a few different programs. I use 4 programs in addition to my anti-virus (SuperAntiSpyware, MalwareBytes, AdAware and Spybot S&D) and between the four, not much will last on this computer for long.

You're right to be cautious, some websites that offer so called free software are actually trying to install spyware on your pc.
Luckily there are some people who are just as fed up as the rest of us with the problems on the internet. They offer free versions of legitimate software - if you're a home user. And thats the only 'catch'. If you run a business you pay for the software.
They also know that about 10% of home users will like the software and decide to pay for a version with more features. So its a good marketing strategy for a legitimate company!
The trick is to only use tried and tested software, and only get it from the company that wrote it. There are safe download sites you can trust, such as
download.com
snapfiles.com
sourceforge.net
And there are also websites that can tell you whats best at the moment, like
computeractive.co.uk
webuser.co.uk
These are both magazines that run websites, theres loads more.
These are safe downloads of genuine software;
You need to install one firewall.
http://www.zonelabs.com Zone Alarm firewall OR
http://www.comodogroup.com/ - Comodo firewall.
You need to install one anti virus;
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ -AVG anti virus or
http://www.avast.com - Avast Antivirus
http://www.bitdefender.co.uk/site/Main/view/Download-Free-Products.html - Bitdefender 8 doesn't run in the background and can be used as a second back up anti virus.
You need all these anti spyware programs;
http://www.ewido.net - AVG(Ewido) anti trojan.
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com
Plus;
http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware
And these are useful utilities;
http://www.mozilla.com/ - Firefox web browser.
http://www.ccleaner.com - Cr*pcleaner Registry cleaner and privacy tool
Winpatrol is a handy utility that manages cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.
http://www.winpatrol.com
http://www.siteadvisor.com -MacAffee Site Advisor warns about malware on sites you are about to visit.
And heres two more useful websites;
http://spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm - The Spyware Warrior site identifies fake anti spyware programs.
https://www.grc.com - Shields Up security site, check your firewall works.

Norton is bloatware. It can cause all sorts of problems with your PC.
AVG anti-virus has been around for years, and has a good reputation.
It's free for personal use, but not for businesses.
The same goes for Lavasoft Ad-Aware.
They hope you'll be happy with the product and upgrade to more powerful software. For personal use, this isn't really necessary.

YES! I use AVG antivirus free and it is reliable andupdates itself daily - the Adaware from Lavasoft is also free and you manually update - removes all adware/spyware - both very reliable and free
They want nothing in return - it is in their interests to protect computers to stop the spread of viruses to mainstream internet

Microsoft currently offer their Live OneCare for a free 90 day trial if you're interested in that. It'll scan for viruses, spyware, has a firewall and can help back-up existing files. It's worth a try maybe?
